13. The Old Library

(Photo not loaded)

This is the Old Public Library and Technical College on Queens Road, near the High Street. It was built in 1874 by public subscription on land given by Mr Thomas Clutterbuck. It was enlarged several times to house the school of science, art and music. However the library became too large, and was moved to it's present site at the top of the High Street in 1928. The Queens Road site was then used for education only until the 1950s.

Note in the photo Boots used to be located next door, before it moved to the High Street.

This photo is located near position 9 in green on the map.
