K9FRIENDS TRAINING TIPS

wpeD.jpg (35836 bytes)    One of the first commands to be taught is the "SIT", the dog should be on the left of the trainer and at the command "SIT" the trainer should stop and pull up on the lead and at the same time press down gently on the dogs back. When completed praise your dog and make a huge fuss of him/her, keep repeating this until the dog can "SIT" without being touched.

wpe13.jpg (32546 bytes)Following on from the "SIT" command  could be the "DOWN", you will try to get your dog to lay down next to you, some dogs do not like this while others think its a game, get your dog to sit first and then place your arm behind the front legs and push them foreward, this should coax the dog to lay down but it will take time and repeated practise to get good results. Some dogs refuse to lay flat, if so lay them on there sides to get them comfortable and then try later to have them laying straight.

wpe15.jpg (31249 bytes)The most difficult  is the "stand" command, after stopping with your dog give the command to "STAND" and place your hand under his belly and lift up slightly , repeat the command and praise your dog.

wpe2.jpg (32199 bytes)The "STAY" command should be done in small stages, command your dog to stay and move a couple of feet away, then return to the dogs side and praise it. Repeat this moving further away until you can drop the lead.

This command takes a great deal of practice

Remember to repeat training commands several times a day and make it fun, use treats to encourage results and never lose your temper , kindness to your dog will result in a better friendship and a more workable animal.
