The Beach
The Arenal beach is just 10 minutes away by car or taxi. It is more than a mile long, a crescent of clean white sand, with showers, toilets, kids' play area, umbrella and sun bed rental and lifeguards in season. It is usually still and very safe and shallow for about a mile out to sea unless a wind springs up, when the lifeguard will raise a yellow flag. If the red flag is up, stay out of the water!
The esplanade is pedestrianised and in the summer is lined with attractive craft stalls at night, and in August there is an outdoor film once a week. The far end of the beach is overlooked by Montgo, known as the elephant mountain because of its shape. There are also plenty of secluded bays within an easy drive, many of them on the way up to Cabo La Nau, which is the eastern most point in Spain offering fantastic views from the lighthouse.
At the far end of the main beach is a river inlet where pedalos can be hired, and boat trips run along the coast from here. Behind the Parador hotel there are incredible Roman Remains in a shallow lagoon, and there are plenty more on the various rocky beaches and coves if you enjoy snorkelling in shallow water or diving in the depths.
