Between
1800 and 1900, Amble grew to be an important port in the North East. It is a fishing port and originally shipped
coal to Europe and England
(including Newcastle!). Natural storm protection was provided by Coquet Island 1 mile offshore (now a bird and
seal sanctuary). The port still has 20
active fishing boats and a modern Marina
with 100 or so yachts / boats moored at the Warkworth end of the
harbour. The Cottage was originally
built around 1890. It incorporated the massive, L-shaped, sandstone walls of
the harbour-master's courtyard and stables.
During 2002/3 the whole
property was re-modelled and re-furbished including a large bathroom, a
second bathroom, garage and courtyard with flower borders. The electric shutter doors give the
ultimate in safety for children and privacy.
Amble is located at the mouth
of Coquet River with seals, salmon, puffins and
numerous other sea birds. The Cottage looks West towards Warkworth Castle
and the Cheviot Hills and North with uninterrupted views towards Alnmouth, Boulmer, Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle,
Seahouses and Bamburgh
Castle. The Farne Islands
and Holy Island are all within 20 miles. Druridge Bay wildlife reserve is 2 miles away.
There are numerous other local nature and bird reserves. Amble is just 15 minutes drive from Alnwick Gardens and Castle (of Harry Potter
fame). The Newcastle end of Hadrian's Wall and
Edinburgh are
both an easy drive away.
Market day is Sunday
at the quayside: very good for fresh fish, meat and vegetables There are many beautiful coastal
and hill walks right on the doorstep. Local shops and bus routes are very
near by. There is a new indoor swimming pool a few minutes walk away. There
is ample parking in local Beach Car Parks.
