Avro Lancaster B Mk III Special Bomber
The Lancasters used by the dambusters were a special variant of the standard Lancaster specially modified by Lancaster designer Roy Chadwick to accomodate the special Upkeep weapon developed by Barnes Wallis. The new specially modified Lancaster was the:
Avro Lancaster B Mk III Special Bomber (Type 464 provisioning)
This specially modified version had the following alterations:
- The bomb bay was modified to carry the special Upkeep weapon
- Callipers and a belt driven system to rotate Upkeep backward were added to hold the weapon
- The Mid Upper turret was removed to compensate for the large Upkeep weapon
