Torbay

Nick Bye

What is your greatest achievement as Mayor?
I am proud of saving Upton St James School, bringing some order to the Council's finances, improving services - including those for our older people, through the establishment of the Torbay Care Trust. I Chair the Torbay Strategic Partnership which has adopted a new Community Plan focusing on economic prosperity. The plans for a South Devon Link Road are now on the Regional Funding Allocation following my intervention. I have welcomed entrepreneurs and investors, including Peter De Savary who is creating a new hotel here. I've put Torbay on the map!

What difference can an elected Mayor make to a community?

An elected Mayor has a huge opportunity as 'Leader of Place' as an ambassador/advocate for an area, as well as making little/local things happen.

What is the main difference between an elected Mayor and a traditional
Mayor?

I served as traditional Mayor in 2003/2004 so can say the roles differ most noticeably in the political aspect. A traditional Mayor performs a neutral/ceremonial role whereas an elected Mayor needs to take decisions and provide political direction.

Will you be standing for re-election?
Watch this space. I was elected October 2005 to May 2011.Quite a long time to go!
