Peter Robinson became First Minister of Northern Ireland in June 2008 following the retirement of Ian Paisley and Robinson's election as leader of the DUP.

In his speech to the Northern Ireland Assembly following his appointment he said "No-one knows better than we do, after a year operating within the Executive, that there is no elevator that will take us to a successful outcome. We will just have to take the staircase - step by step by step."

He is married to fellow Assembly Member and Member of Parliament Iris Robinson and has three children.
