AVG anti-virus
AVG do a range of products for various scenarios, including a free edition for personal use. They provide regular free updates, which is important as the virus/anti-virus issue is an ongoing thing and new viruses appear all the time. Updates are normally downloaded automatically from the Internet.

Zone Alarm firewall
A firewall is essential in these connected times. Your valuable data is at risk if you don't take precautions against hackers and so forth. Even if you have a hardware firewall device, a software firewall is still useful to prevent unauthorised outgoing traffic (see below). Zone Labs provide regular updates.

Ad-Aware anti-spyware
SpyBot Search & Destroy
Many intrusions into your system these days are not malicious, in the sense of destroying anything. What they do though is send out data about you, show unwanted adverts, add unasked-for toolbars, and various other undesirable things. These things are termed spyware, malware, and various other terms. I have two products here as the area is more diverse than viruses and more than one tool can be useful to catch more 'offenders'.
Ad-Aware and Spybot can help to remove these intruders. LavaSoft and SpyBot both provide regular updates.
