HOSTNAME

Synopsis

HOSTNAME [/?] [/FQDN[+|-]]

Description

The HOSTNAME command prints the system's host name, as configured by the system administrator.

Unlike IBM's 16-bit HOSTNAME it has no reliance upon %ETC%\HOSTS and does not make the presumption that the hostname is the domain name to which the IP address of the first network card in the machine happens to map.

The host name printed will not necessarily be the default host name used by the SMTP mail system for message canonicalization. The mail system allows the system host name to be overridden, if the local host is not actually the mailhost where the mailboxes live.

Command-specific options

/FQDN
If this option is enabled, HOSTNAME will pass the hostname through the standard name qualification procedure before printing it.
