Description

The HELPMSG command displays the on-line help for alphanumeric messages, or invokes the on-line documentation reader on a given section of a given on-line book.

Error numbers are either plain numbers, in which case the error message text is read from the system error files, or may be prefixed by 3 alphabetic characters denoting the message file to search for the error message text. For example:

[c:\]helpmsg cmd0006

If the argument is not recognised as an error number, then HELPMSG assumes that help about a specific topic is being requested and invokes the on-line documentation reader on a given section of a given on-line book. If no book is specified in which to look up the topic, HELPMSG will use the value of the CMDREF environment variable. If the CMDREF environment variable is empty, or does not exist, HELPMSG will use the OS/2 Warp Command Reference.
