JdeBP's Ceroc events list 2008

Here are the events (freestyles, opening nights, balls, &c.) for 2008 that I know about.

As always, this is my list. You won't find Manchester, or London, or Scotland events here. I'm not concerned with those. Someone else can list them.

If something is not on here, it's because no-one has told me about it. Some franchises are well organized, with detailed schedules supplied up to a year in advance. (Step forward and bow, Ceroc Nantwich, Ceroc South Birmingham, and JiveFever Coventry.) Some franchises have non-functional web sites but have have regular flyers with calendars for the next two months that I can pick up whenever I'm around. Some franchises are disorganized, with non-functional web sites, and no calendars of forthcoming events over the coming months.

2008 week 1

Thursday Friday January the 3rd Ceroc Kidlington is closed this week. (See alternative venues for Thursday.)

2008 week 9

Oi! Nigel! You were supposed to have sent those Coventry dates to me four weeks ago. Where are they?

Friday February the 29th

Ceroc Worcester Leap Year freestyle at Coppertops, from 20:00 onwards. This is a two room event, with a Utopia room downstairs. Tickets £10 on the door, £8 in advance.

It's also a friend of mine's birthday. It says 90th birthday on the invitation, for some reason. This is quite perplexing. She doesn't look that old. And her daughter is only in her teens.

I have a difficult decision to make. After all, if she really is 90, there won't be that many more birthdays.

Saturday March the 1st

Ceroc Worcester "Blango" American Dance specialist workshop with Lucky and Ruby at Coppertops. (Tickets £25 in advance only. Workshop from 12:00 – 16:00.)

That's 02:00 BST, I presume, which is only 01:00 GMT. Remember that the clocks go forward at 01:00 GMT.

I presumed incorrectly. It was 02:00 GMT.

Much as I like Blues, it's going to take a lot of persuasion and Feminine Wiles to get me to drive for a hour to Derby instead of for 5 minutes down the road to the first local freestyle since 2004.

It's the first night of Amir's Official Birthday, today. He has requested that there be no puddings this year. He's on a diet, apparently. So everyone please bring him some Ryvita, rice cakes, and Kellogg's Special K.

Yes, this was a last minute venue change.

  • CDC Tea Dance at the Lickey End Working Men's Social Club

2008 week 19

Monday May the 5th

It's a bank holiday, so most venues will be closed today. See Monday class list.

Want2Dance Redditch is holding a bank holiday freestyle at the Arrow Valley social club.

Most of the venues that are regularly open on bank holiday Mondays do something different for the bank holiday, such as a "fun" class instead of the standard classes, or simply, as with Want2Dance Redditch, making the evening into a freestyle evening.

Although Ceroc Wolverhampton at the Goodyear Pavilion is, unusually, also open this Monday, the format is exactly that of a standard Thursday evening regular weekly class. Mike Allsop made a point of saying that it's not a freestyle, a Cinderella evening, or a non-standard-classes day.

Graham The D.J. says that Ceroc Central Birmingham at The Tower Ballroom is open today. But its own web site says, in capital letters, that it is rescheduled to the following Wednesday on bank holiday Mondays. There's a mix-up somewhere. Check, if you intend to try going.

Wednesday May the 7th

Now that Steve is back from holiday, regular CDC Wednesday evenings resume at the Northfield British Legion Club today.

Also, because Monday was a bank holiday, Ceroc Central Birmingham at The Tower Ballroom has its regular weekday class today.

A choice:

  • Ceroc Worcester weekender, with daytime workshops and a three room freestyle and barbeque at Coppertops

This has been rescheduled to August because Ceroc Daventry decided that it was, after all, going to hold a big freestyle this weekend. Debbie Two only found out by reading the flyers at the last Daventry freestyle, I gather. Welcome to my world, Debbie! ☺

  • Ceroc Daventry Stars and Stripes freestyle at the Leisure Centre

The theme is U.S. Independence Day. Someone should have told them the correct day of the year for that.

Doors open at 20:00, but there'll probably be classes, competitions, cabarets, and whatnot, as usual, for the first hour and a bit. The main room shuts at 00:00 as usual. The Blues room goes on until 03:00. Tickets are once again £15 on the door, or £12.50 in advance. (The usual Ceroc Central price for two-room events is £10.)

  • Ceroc Wythall freestyle at the Park Hall.

This isn't a last-minute surprise sprung on other venues. Ceroc South Birmingham announces its dates up to a year in advance. This one has been listed here since 2007.

The normal freestyle price of £8 on the door applies. Standard format: One fun lesson, dancing before and after. You know the drill.

Or, if you prefer an alternative, a group of dancers are heading off to The Tower Ballroom this evening. It's not a Ceroc event. It's just a group of dancers Invading a regular nightclub night.

If you are looking for something truly alternative for this weekend, then you might consider coming to the Town and Country Festival at the NAC in Stoneleigh. There's no dancing, but in past years the Festival has been relatively good for arts and crafts. It's "under new management" this year, though. So no promises.
