Almshouse Arcade is situated in The Hornet, a few yards from Chichester’s Market. It was built in 1802, originally providing six cottages for the widow women of the parish. That use continued until 1966, when the building became vacant, due to purpose-built bungalows being provided elsewhere. It remained empty for several years, until it was purchased in 1977, by Barnett Removals and House Clearance. In 1983, it was converted into starter units and today remains one of Chichester’s best kept secrets, with numerous little units providing a multitude of goodies, from old toys to modern computers.
