A Great War Album - excerpts from a special book

The Album was given to Nurse Harvey at Christmas 1901 'from Papa' and begins with a cautionary verse from 'JHH' (almost certainly her brother) as follows:-

Of course

He had hunted the Bengal Tigers
In their native jungle lair
Faced the horrid hippopotamus
And awful grizzly bear
Braved the dreaded anaconda
Sought the lion in his den
But he quailed before a woman
When she tried to stone a hen.

20/12/1901
JHH with best wishes

There are many entries from friends and family, made during her childhood and over 80 from identifiable Great War Soldiers, a list of whom is on the next page.

This sad and evocative picture is entitled 'Spooning' and is from a Private in the Suffolks, 26061 Solomon Horonzik, likely to be a Russian art teacher. It appears he was discharged on 10th December 1916 - "being no longer physically fit for war service". I have been helped by some kind persons who have supplied this information. Sorry about the poor reproduction; it was drawn 90 odd years ago.

Little is presently known about Nurse Harvey, other than that she came from Oxfordshire and was at Gravesend Hospital, spending at least some of this time in the Tingey Ward, from 1916 to 1919 when many of these entries are dated. However, this photo was found loose in the Album and maybe, just maybe, this could be Nurse Harvey.......
