Elliot is married with two grown up children and, before becoming an MP, he was Head of Special Needs at Greatfield High School in Hull, gaining the marginal constituency of Glanford and Scunthorpe in 1987.
He was Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Countryside & Animal Welfare and, in 1997, became Minister for Fisheries, Water & Nature Protection and, latterly, Minister for Environment & Climate Change at DEFRA.
Elliot is Honorary Vice President of the Association of Drainage Authorities and Wildlife and Countryside Link, also Honorary President of North Lincolnshire Royal Society for the Protection of Animals. He holds an Honorary Fellowship of Lincoln University for services to nature conservation and is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers for services to flood and coastal Defence.`
His leisure Interests include ornithology, nature conservation, global biodiversity, countryside issues, travel, wildlife photography, diving, environmental issues.
