Albert and Jane are my Great-Grandparents

Albert in 1901 |
Albert was born on 4th March 1853 at Hartshead, Stalybridge, Ashton,
Yorkshire. He was living at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington in
1861. Before he was married Jane, he joined the
West Riding Yeomanry.
Albert and his father George were lodging with the
Smith family (Joseph Smith and Martha
Shackleton) at Gilstead,
Bingley, Yorkshire in 1871. Possibly Joseph was
a relation to his future wife Jane Smith, or
Martha a distant relative of her grandmother, 2 years hence, but
I can't find any links
to confirm this.
These would have been happy times for Albert. He
met his wife while living at Gilstead, and in later life, when he build a
house on the Wirral, he named the house Gilstead after this place.
Albert married Jane Smith on 29 March 1873 in
the district of Keighley, (probably in Bingley)
and he and Jane were living at Heather Bank, Bingley, Yorkshire after their
marriage in 1881. They moved to Birkenhead about 1882.
|
Albert and Jane started their family once
then had settled in Birkenhead.
Sarah Stocks, my
grandmother was the oldest of their four children, born in 1877.
Once in Birkenhead, he took up,
his quarters with the Cheshire Engineers, he was soon advanced to the rank
of Company Sergeant Major and became one of the regiments crack shots. In
1891 he joined the King’s Liverpool’s, and in 1893 won the Queens Bronze and
Silver medals. He was in the last 100 of the Queen’s in 1890, 1892, 1893,
1895 and 1896 and win the third prize in 1892.
Living at 5 Cobden St., Birkenhead in 1891 and 1901
Has passed, aged 70, at 45 Thompson Street on Saturday,
January 21st 1922.

Jane in 1901 |
Jane Smith was born in Marlow,
near Bingley (Micklethwaite), Yorkshire on 16th
February 1851. The birth registered 22-Feb-1851, born at Marlow,
Near Bingley. Marlow doesn't appear on any
maps, either the 1852 OS edition or present, but is clearly recorded on
Jane's birth certificate and the census record for where her parents
were living in 1841. I believe it is an old name for the area near
or at Marley.
Birth certificate confirms
father as Henry Smith,
Labourer, and mother
Sarah Smith, formerly Pighills. "The X marks the mark of Sarah
Smith", so when married, Sarah couldn't write. Perhaps that
is why her name was recorded as "Pighills" rather than "Pickles"
Jane lived in Crossflats, a hamlet next to Lime
Kilns on the outskirts of Bingley. However, her birthplace was recorded
as Bingley in 1891.
Jane died in Birkenhead on 23rd Jan 1929 and was
buried in Bebington Cemetery 3 days later. |
Albert and Jane had four confirmed
children, Sarah (my
grandmother), George, Walter and Mini. Lavinia who was born in
Tranmere 1891 and died shortly after was also probably their daughter.
