We try to offer coaching in all the major disciplines but the club is run by volunteers and not all events are available all the time. If you are interested in a particular event, please ask about it. We can usually put you in touch with someone or let you know about regional coaching clinics.

What to do first.

For athletes under fifteen, come along to a training session on a Monday evening, join in and see if you like it.

For athletes over 15, interested in track and field, get in touch with a relevant coach or email info@cambridgeandcoleridge.org.uk

For athletes interested in road or cross-country running, come along to a Tuesday night training session, join in and see if you like it.

What if I’m new to athletics?

The club welcomes athletes of all abilities and we’ll try to find a group that meets your needs. Check out the options below and if none describes your position, even approximately, email info@cambridgeandcoleridge.org.uk.

If you are 15 or under turn up on a Monday evening and check in at the Pavilion at the track 10 minutes or so before the session starts. You will be introduced to a coach for the event(s) you are interested in. In the winter come along to the Monday evening indoor session at Chesterton Community Sports Centre and talk to the people there.

If you are over 15 and interested in track and field, phone the relevant coach or come along on a Tuesday evening in the summer, when most coaches will be around, and ask for advice. It will be possible to fit you in to a training group appropriate for your needs.

If you are interested in road running or general endurance events for fitness and competition, come along to the University Track on a Tuesday evening at 6.30 (winter or summer) and introduce yourself to the coach for that session, or email info@cambridgeandcoleridge.org.uk.

What if I’m experienced?

Come along on the relevant evening and talk to one of the coaches.

If you’re interested in coaching or becoming a track or field judge….. we’d be delighted to explain how to do that. We will subsidise the cost of training courses. Please turn up and enquire or email info@cambridgeandcoleridge.org.uk.

What we expect from our members

Please read these documents - Parent and athelete responsibilities, plus incident guidelines.

We are keen that all members should get the most they can from the club. We understand that athletics has a different priority for different members and that some will want to do more than others. The following notes are intended to give guidance on the broad expectation the club has of members.

Members are expected to participate fully in the club so that the enjoyment and success of all can be enhanced. This means taking part in team events, whenever possible, or helping out in other ways to try to make events successful.

All members are expected to treat each other with respect and to adopt the club’s equal opportunities policy.

It is important that all activities are carried out safely. Equipment should be used only as appropriate for the relevant event. Members should NEVER cross the infield at the track except when part of a supervised group of throwers or taking part in a throwing event. All members should be aware of the activities of other athletes and avoid getting in each other’s way, through, for example, poor lane discipline.

What you can expect from your coach

Please read these documents - Coach and Team manager responsibilities.

All the club’s coaches are qualified through undertaking UK Athletics (or equivalent) courses. Many have years of experience as coaches and competitive athletes. They will provide you with advice and will supervise training sessions.

General arrangements for coaching sessions will be publicised on the notice boards, newsletter and web site. Specific details will be determined by individual coaches and you should ensure you know what arrangements have been made.

Coaches are keen to see their athletes progress and will work with you to decide the most appropriate activities for your circumstances. Please let them know how you have performed and discuss with them the events and matches in which you would like to participate.

The club follows UK Athletics policies in seeing athletics as moving from ‘fun to fulfilment’. This means that we encourage you to try out several events, particularly if you are a young athlete. We understand that, especially for young athletes, there are many calls on your time including other physical activities at school or college. The club’s (and national bodies’) policy is to keep training levels low for younger athletes and to discourage specialisation as long as possible.

Your coach will treat you with respect and will never force you to do anything you do not wish to do. Coaches will give you advice, guidance and encouragement but ultimately each athlete has to take responsibility for his or her training and performance.

All the club’s coaches are volunteers and receive no payment of any kind. Please recognise that they have other calls on their time including jobs and families!
