Cog Wheel

There's only one wheel on this wagon and here's how it's made!

Open a new canvas (200x200) and select the rectangle tool. Draw a 150x10 vertical rectangle in your chosen fill colour. Clone this rectangle 3 TIMES (EDIT>CLONE) and, while the top clone is still selected, rotate it 90 degrees in any direction (MODIFY>TRANSFORM>ROTATE 90) to get this:

Now, click the vertical rectangle again to select the second clone and rotate the clone by 45 degrees (MODIFY>TRANSFORM>NUMERIC TRANSFORM, then select ROTATE from the drop-down and type 45 into the entry field). Finally, click to select the last vertical clone and rotate it 135 degrees, until you see this:

Let's make this bunch into a single unit by clicking EDIT>SELECT ALL, then MODIFY>COMBINE>UNION. Centre the unioned object on the canvas (COMMANDS>DOCUMENT>CENTRE IN DOCUMENT).
Now, lets create an outer ring to hold this lot together!
Select the elipse tool and draw a 140x140 circle in the same fill colour. Remember to hold the "Shift" key down whilst drawing in order to get a perfect circle. Centre this image in the document, to get the following result:

Still with me? O.K. -
Draw another circle at 130x130 and centre it on the canvas as before, to get this result:

(I've changed the fill colour only to clarify the positioning of the overlaid images).
While this circle is still selected, press and hold the shift key and click the original circle to include it in the selection. Then click MODIFY>COMBINE>PUNCH, and you should end up with something like this:

The basis for creating your own customised cogwheel! Now click EDIT>SELECT ALL and then click MODIFY>COMBINE>UNION. And apply whatever fills, shadows etc. you feel like applying!

But what if you want some more teeth on this baby? And, possibly, the same number of "spokes"? Something like this, maybe?

O.K. - we'll go back a couple of steps to where you drew your first circle to create the outer ring.

Before you draw the circle, copy your unioned object to the clipboard (EDIT>COPY). Now draw your 140x140 circle and centre it on the canvas. Select both objects and click MODIFY>COMBINE>PUNCH, to get this:

A pretty little bunch of teeth! Rotate this new object by 22 degrees. Now click EDIT>PASTE to retrieve your unioned object. Carry on with the steps as described above to create the outer ring. Select all objects (EDIT>SELECT ALL) and union them (MODIFY>COMBINE>UNION), and there you are!

Have fun!

Take me to the top!
