Set in the heart of the redeveloped Salford Quays at the end of Pier 8 the Lowry opened on 28th April 2000. It is a very unusual building constructed of stainless steel and glass.Inside not only is there a Gallery housing the Lowry collection, there are also 2 theatres one with 1,730 seats and the other with 466 seats. It also has bars, cafes and a restaurant. The whole area covers no less than 5 football pitches.
Just 1 ½ miles from Manchster city centre the building was designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford. It was completed in 2000 with the help for £21m of National Lottery funding. The

It is the home to the worlds largest colllection of Lowrys, most of which were previously housed in the Salford Museum.
