This work was inspired by an incident in Pendlebury, Manchester. Lowry wrote a letter on 20 September 1930 '…as to the subject. It was a case of a woman found drowned (suicide) some years ago in Pendlebury, a large crowd seemed to come absolutely from nowhere in no time. The incident rather got hold of me.'
