Due to receiving numerous emails over the past few years — generally requesting details about DVDs of various UK series not covered by the book guide itself — I've compiled the following list which (hopefully) includes every single release on shiny disc to date.
As with the main book guide, the focus is essentially on UK telefantasy series and related episodes from otherwise non-telefantasy series. To the less geeky among you: everything sci-fi, horror and fantasy-related that I can think of that has been produced for UK television and which has been released on DVD. The emphasis is primarily on releases in the UK (Region 2) and the United States (Region 1).
High definition releases on Blu-ray are also mentioned where relevant, although it should be noted that the vast majority of UK television programmes prior to around 2005 would not see any major benefit from a Blu-ray release as they were not produced in a high definition format. Anything produced on 35mm film, however, would be ideally suited to a Blu-ray release — The Prisoner and Thunderbirds have already been released and the film seasons of The Avengers are due out in 2010.
As with the main section of the web site, it's almost inevitable that there will be something missing that should be included. If anyone manages to spot any omissions — or, indeed, anything that's incorrect — please get in contact via the email address at the top of the page.

Surprisingly, given their age, the BBC's Quatermass serials are in remarkably good shape in the archives. Although only the first two episode from The Quatermass Experiment exist, the remaining two serials, Quatermass II and Quatermass and the Pit, exist in their entirety. Needless to say, as all three stories were broadcast live, and videotape was still a few years off, the technical quality of the existing telerecordings is distinctly variable. The existing prints of The Quatermass Experiment betray their early origins by virtue of being pretty awful quality, with an insect even crawling around on the picture at one point! Quatermass II is a distinct improvement, while Quatermass and the Pit had the good fortune to be granted a large enough budget for extensive pre-filming to be carried out on 35mm film. Even better, the original film prints of these sections were later edited into the telerecordings of the episodes. All three of the BBC's Quatermass serials have been released on Region 2 DVD in the UK as The Quatermass Collection, and have been extensively restored by the team responsible for tidying up the Doctor Who DVDs. In the case of Quatermass and the Pit, going back to the original telerecordings and re-transferring the 35mm film inserts has quite literally blown the previously released compilation version out of the water. In should be noted that all six episodes of this serial have also undergone the VidFIRE process which has previously been used to great effect on the Doctor Who DVDs and which restores the video look of the original broadcasts. This is arguably one of the finest pieces of television restoration committed to DVD and has to be seen to be believed. Extras include The Kneale Tapes (the Time Shift documentary about Nigel Kneale's TV career) as well as PDF files of the scripts to the final four episodes of The Quatermass Experiment. Also included is an extensive booklet on the making of the three serials by Andrew Pixley. All three serials are subtitled. Euston Films' 1979 Quatermass serial has been released on Region 2 DVD in the UK, and on Region 1 DVD in the United States. In both countries this included both the episodic version and also the movie edit The Quatermass Conclusion which received a cinematic release. The UK release has been deleted, although it remains available in Australia. All three of the Hammer movies based on the original BBC serials have been released on Region 2 DVD in the UK, and the 2005 BBC Four re-make of The Quatermass Experiment has also been issued. |

No subtitles on the Season One release in the UK, with music edits to the final episode of Season Two. The initial release of Season Two in the UK had discs one and two labelled wrongly, resulting in many people becoming confused as to which order the episodes should be watched in. Also, one of the extras in the set (on disc three) was the edited US version of the final episode from Season 1 which would not play beyond the fortieth minute. These three discs were therefore re-pressed and made avaiaalble to buyers with the affected copies. The series is released on DVD in the United States under the title MI-5. It should be noted that the episodes on the Region 1 releases are the full-length UK versions, not the forty-five minute edits which are generally broadcast in the United States. |
