UK Sci-Fi TV on DVD
Doctor Who

Due to receiving numerous emails over the past few years — generally requesting details about DVDs of various UK series not covered by the book guide itself — I've compiled the following list which (hopefully) includes every single release on shiny disc to date.

As with the main book guide, the focus is essentially on UK telefantasy series and related episodes from otherwise non-telefantasy series. To the less geeky among you: everything sci-fi, horror and fantasy-related that I can think of that has been produced for UK television and which has been released on DVD. The emphasis is primarily on releases in the UK (Region 2) and the United States (Region 1).

High definition releases on Blu-ray are also mentioned where relevant, although it should be noted that the vast majority of UK television programmes prior to around 2005 would not see any major benefit from a Blu-ray release as they were not produced in a high definition format. Anything produced on 35mm film, however, would be ideally suited to a Blu-ray release — The Prisoner and Thunderbirds have already been released and the film seasons of The Avengers are due out in 2010.

As with the main section of the web site, it's almost inevitable that there will be something missing that should be included. If anyone manages to spot any omissions — or, indeed, anything that's incorrect — please get in contact via the email address at the top of the page.

Please note that, unless specified, the "Notes" generally refer to the Region 2 DVD releases and other editions may (or may not) differ.

Planet of the Daleks
Two-story set released in the UK in October 2009 under the title Dalek War, and due for release in the United States in March 2010.

Of major interest is that Episode Three of Planet of the Daleks, held only as a 16mm black and white telerecording, has been restored to full colour. Online rumours had previously suggested that this would be done entirely from scratch, as with the colourisations of the early years of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. However, the project to extract the original colour subcarrier from black and white telerecordings advanced dramatically in 2008, as evidenced by the broadcasting on BBC Two in December 2008 of the Dad's Army episode Room at the Bottom, which was also originally produced in colour and now only held as a 16mm film print.

Although the Doctor Who episode was artificially re-coloured in the United States, the newly developed colour recovery process has allowed major improvements to be made to the resultant effort. Full details can be found in the Dalek War article on the Doctor Who Restoration Team web site.

The DVD of The Invisible Enemy included an authoring error which resulted in several scenes from Part Three being played out of order. A replacement disc was subsequently pressed by 2 Entertain and made available to people who had purchased it. Anyone unsure about their own copy should check the catalogue number on the front of the disc. The affected version is "BBCDVD2799", while the corrected version is "BBCDVD2799 - A".

The six stories from Season 16 were first released on Region 1 DVD in the United States in 2002, both individually and as a complete Key to Time box set.

The subsequent Key to Time box set released in the UK in September 2007 included the limited extras from the US release as well as a whole host of new features, including a second commentary on three of the stories. However, unlike the earlier release, the episodes were fully remastered. The set was initially limited to just 15,000 copies, but finally gained a proper release in November 2009.

The remastered versions of the six stories were released in the United States in March 2009, both individually and as a new Key to Time box set.

Five Doctors The 1999 release of The Five Doctors was the BBC's very first Doctor Who DVD to be made available, and was of the 1995 "Special Edition" which had previously been released on VHS and which included new effects and extra scenes. The only extra on the disc was an audio track featuring the isolated soundtrack — as an added bonus it ran at the wrong speed! The release of the story in the United States gained an exclusive commentary track featuring Peter Davison and Terrance Dicks.

More recently, the story has been re-released in both countries as a two-disc set which includes the transmitted version of the story as well as the 1995 re-edit. As usual, the release features a whole host of extras, among which are three commentary tracks, including the one from the original US release.

Remembrance of the Daleks Originally released in 2001, the original DVD of Remembrance of the Daleks had a number of issues — namely a missing special effect which was inadvertently omitted when the story was re-built from higher generation source tapes, a bungled attempt to implement a multi-angle scene in the extras, and a general lack of extras on the making of the story. The story was later issued as part of the Davros Collection set, which included a whole host of new extras for the story.

A brand-new two-disc Special Edition was released on Region 2 DVD in the UK in July 2009.

The original Region 2 release contained an authoring error which meant that the episode World War Three skipped a chapter when it was chosen from the main episode menu. Although it was possible to watch the episode properly by using the 'Play All' option, 2 Entertain swiftly announced that a replacement disc would be made available.

The numerous extras include commentaries on all thirteen episodes, new 5.1 sound mixes and the cutdown version of the Doctor Who Confidential episodes which covered the making of the series.

The Complete Specials The Next Doctor / Planet of the Dead / The Waters of Mars / The End of Time, Part One / The End of Times, Part Two

NOTE: As The Next Doctor was not produced in high definition, the version in the Blu-ray set will either be a standard DVD or a professionally upscaled copy which will be of a lesser quality than the other episodes in the set. Either way, it'll still be far better than the terrible Freeview transmissions in the UK!

Lost in Time Three-disc set containing eighteen episodes from the black and white era of the programme — the only existing examples from the stories which were destroyed in the 1960s and 1970s.

The stories with less than 50% of their episodes missing (The Reign of Terror / The Tenth Planet /The Ice Warriors) are expected to be released individually as part of the ongoing range of DVDs.

The release also gathers together numerous clips, recovered footage, off-screen 8mm recordings and home movie footage, as well as an expanded version of the Missing Years documentary, originally released on video in 1998.

The copy of Remembrance of the Daleks also saw the reinstatement of a special effect which was mistakenly omitted from the original DVD release, as well as a set of completely new extras for the story.

In addition to the Remembrance extras, the set also included subtitled copies of all the Big Finish audio dramas to have featured Davros, as well as a brand-new story exclusive to the collection.

Unfortunately, authoring errors meant that a PDF extra was omitted from the Destiny disc and several holes in the new 5.1 sound mix for Remembrance meant that 2 Entertain offered replacement discs to anyone who contacted them.
