UK Sci-Fi TV on DVD
The Avengers

As a result of receiving numerous emails over the past few years — generally requesting details about DVDs of various UK series not covered by the book guide itself — I've compiled the following list which (hopefully) includes every single release on shiny disc to date.

As with the main book guide, the focus is essentially on UK telefantasy series and related episodes from otherwise non-telefantasy series. To the less geeky among you: everything sci-fi, horror and fantasy-related that I can think of that has been produced for UK television and which has been released on DVD. The emphasis is primarily on releases in the UK (Region 2) and the United States (Region 1).

As with the main section of the web site, it's inevitable that there is something missing that should be included. If anyone manages to spot any omissions — or, indeed, anything that's incorrect — please get in contact via the email address at the top of the page.

Please note that, unless specified, the "Notes" generally refer to the Region 2 releases and other editions may (or may not) differ.

26 Episodes / Videotape

Regular Characters
John Steed (Patrick Macnee)
Dr David Keel (Ian Hendry)
Of the twenty-six episodes from Season One of The Avengers, only Girl on the Trapeze and The Frighteners are known to exist in their entirety, although the first fifteen minutes of Hot Snow, the first episode, also exists. Ironically, the character of John Steed doesn't appear in either Girl on the Trapeze or the existing Hot Snow segment.

None of the existing Season One footage has ever been released on Region 2 DVD in the UK, but it has been made available on Region 1 DVD in the United States on a bonus DVD which was included as part of the 2006 re-release of the Emma Peel Megaset from A&E.

Luckily for people who had bought the earlier release of that DVD set, the bonus DVD was also made available to buy seperately.

As well as the existing Season One footage, the bonus DVD also includes Channel 4's 1992 Without Walls documentary Avenging the Avengers, the alternate "chessboard" title sequence used on the Emma Peel episodes in the United States, the three minute promotional episode The Strange Case of the Missing Corpse, and the New Avengers episode K is for Kill, Part 1: The Tiger Awakes which features a cameo appearance by Emma Peel.
