Due to receiving numerous emails over the past few years — generally requesting details about DVDs of various UK series not covered by the book guide itself — I've compiled the following list which (hopefully) includes every single release on shiny disc to date.
As with the main book guide, the focus is essentially on UK telefantasy series and related episodes from otherwise non-telefantasy series. To the less geeky among you: everything sci-fi, horror and fantasy-related that I can think of that has been produced for UK television and which has been released on DVD. The emphasis is primarily on releases in the UK (Region 2) and the United States (Region 1).
High definition releases on Blu-ray are also mentioned where relevant, although it should be noted that the vast majority of UK television programmes prior to around 2005 would not see any major benefit from a Blu-ray release as they were not produced in a high definition format. Anything produced on 35mm film, however, would be ideally suited to a Blu-ray release — The Prisoner and Thunderbirds have already been released and the film seasons of The Avenegrs are due out in 2010.
As with the main section of the web site, it's almost inevitable that there will be something missing that should be included. If anyone manages to spot any omissions — or, indeed, anything that's incorrect — please get in contact via the email address at the top of the page.
Please note that, unless specified, the "Notes" generally refer to the Region 2 DVD releases and other editions may (or may not) differ.

Black and White 26 Episodes / Videotape Regular Characters John Steed (Patrick Macnee) Dr David Keel (Ian Hendry) |
Of the twenty-six episodes from Season 1 of The Avengers, only Girl on the Trapeze and The Frighteners are known to exist in their entirety, although the first fifteen minutes of Hot Snow, the first episode, also exists. Ironically, the character of John Steed doesn't appear in either Girl on the Trapeze or the existing Hot Snow segment. The existing footage from Season 1 was finally released on Region 2 DVD in the UK in October 2009 when it was included with the complete release of Season 2 — see Season 2 below for further details. The existing Season 1 footage was released on Region 1 DVD in the United States on a bonus DVD which was included as part of the 2006 re-release of the Emma Peel Megaset from A&E. Luckily for people who had bought the earlier release of that DVD set, the bonus DVD was also made available to buy seperately, although both versions have now been deleted. As well as the existing Season 1 footage, the bonus DVD also included Channel 4's 1992 Without Walls documentary, Avenging the Avengers, the alternate "chessboard" title sequence used on the Emma Peel episodes in the United States, the three minute promotional episode The Strange Case of the Missing Corpse, and the New Avengers episode K is for Kill, Part 1: The Tiger Awakes which features a cameo appearance by Emma Peel. |
