UK Sci-Fi TV on DVD
A for Andromeda — My Parents are Aliens

Due to receiving numerous emails over the past few years — generally requesting details about DVDs of various UK series not covered by the book guide itself — I've compiled the following list which (hopefully) includes every single release on shiny disc to date.

As with the main book guide, the focus is essentially on UK telefantasy series and related episodes from otherwise non-telefantasy series. To the less geeky among you: everything sci-fi, horror and fantasy-related that I can think of that has been produced for UK television and which has been released on DVD. The emphasis is primarily on releases in the UK (Region 2) and the United States (Region 1).

High definition releases on Blu-ray are also mentioned where relevant, although it should be noted that the vast majority of UK television programmes prior to around 2005 would not see any major benefit from a Blu-ray release as they were not produced in a high definition format. Anything produced on 35mm film, however, would be ideally suited to a Blu-ray release — The Prisoner and Thunderbirds have already been released and the film seasons of The Avengers are due out in 2010.

As with the main section of the web site, it's almost inevitable that there will be something missing that should be included. If anyone manages to spot any omissions — or, indeed, anything that's incorrect — please get in contact via the email address at the top of the page.

Please note that, unless specified, the "Notes" generally refer to the Region 2 DVD releases and other editions may (or may not) differ.

A for Andromeda
(1961)
Of the original seven episode serial, the BBC archives currently only hold The Face of the Tiger, the final fifteen minutes of The Last Mystery, a number of film inserts and a complete off-air audio recording of The Last Mystery which was returned to the BBC late in 2006.

All existing footage was released on Region 2 DVD in the UK alongside the sequel, The Andromeda Breakthrough, as The Andromeda Anthology — sadly the audio recording of The Last Mystery was returned some months after the DVD release.

The existing footage from A for Andromeda is included as part of a two-hour twenty-seven minute reconstruction of the serial which uses photographs and on-screen captions to explain the story. All major pieces of footage (The Face of the Tiger, the existing part of The Last Mystery, and a five-minute extract from The Machine) also feature an optional commentary.

Extras include a documentary, PDF files for the scripts to the missing episodes and a comprehensive booklet of notes by Andrew Pixley.

Bergerac What a lot of people may not know is that the popular Jersey-based detective series from the 1980s was occasionally home to the odd telefantasy episode.

Of the three produced, the best-remembered is almost certainly Fires in the Fall, the 1986 Christmas Special which involved a mysterious arsonist dressed as a monk — it was included in the Season 4 DVD set.

What Dreams May Come?, also from Season 4, featured the ever-dependable Charles Grey and a black covern, while The Dig from Season 8 featured a cursed Viking artefact.

Jupiter Moon A short-lived science fiction soap-opera which began broadcasting three times a week on BSB's Galaxy channel in March 1990 and which suddenly went off air after 108 episodes due to the merger in November 1990 of BSB and Sky Television. The remaining 42 episodes were eventually shown on the UK version of the Sci-Fi Channel when they picked up the complete run of 150 episodes.

The first 60 episodes of the series have been released on Region 2 DVD in the UK, with various extras such as interviews, text biographies, production notes and behind-the-scenes features. Sadly, despite a change in the release strategy, sales didn't prove sufficent to continue with the releases beyond the ninth volume.

K9 and Company Until the debut of Torchwhood in October 2005, this was the only live-action spin-off from Doctor Who to have been produced by the BBC. It was finally released on DVD in June 2008 as part of the K9 Tales box set, which also included the metal mutt's debut Doctor Who story, The Invisible Enemy.

As with all other Doctor Who releases from 2|Entertain, the K9 and Company release featured a wealth of extras, including commentary, production notes, photo gallery, relevant archive footage and newly recorded material. As a bonus it also includes various PDF features that can be accessed via a PC or Mac, such as the K9 Annual 1983, the four K9 picture books from Sparrow, and the original Radio Times entries for the programme.

Killer Net A controversial and violent four-part thriller from the pen of Prime Suspect creator Linda La Plante. Notable here mainly for taking a BUGS-like approach to technology and computing — in other words inaccurate, over-excited and just a little bit unlikely!

Killer Net was released unedited on video in 1998. Unfortunately, for the 2005 DVD release it was edited into a single feature-length drama, in the process losing all the footage which ran under the credits between the end of Episode One and the beginning of Episode Four. It also happens to be 14:9 (ie 4:3 with black bars top and bottom). No subtitles.

For the record, Episode One ends with Scott watching Sadie's sales pitch for the Killer Net game on his PC (49' 58"), Episode Two ends with the discovery of the body in the tunnel (1h 38' 04") and Episode Three ends with a shot of Inspector Colby looking out of the police station window (2h 26' 32").

Life on Mars
(UK)
The original UK series, starring John Simm as Sam Tyler, a 2005 police officer who is hit by a car and finds himself back in 1973, where he encounters the unreformed and distinctly 1970s Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister).

Was he dead, mad, or in a coma? Unusually all was revealed in the final episode of Season 2, which brought the series to a resounding end before it could grow stale.

Unsurprisingly, the period music proved a major hurdle for the DVD release, with many tracks being substituted for alternate pices.

The first season of spin-off series Ashes to Ashes was broadcast in 2008.

Lost in Austen ITV1 series in which Amanda Price (Jemima Price) goes into her bathroom and discovers that Pride and Prejudice character Elizabeth Bennet has walked through a mysterious door in the wall. Luckily the portal goes both ways and Amanda soons finds herself corrupting Jane Austen's original novel and upsetting Bennets, Bingleys and Mr Darcy along the way.

Rather unfortunately, the DVD release was edited to completely remove the scene in which Amanda sings Petula Clark's Downtown, although the subsequent reference to the scene later on is left intact.

As well as the (nearly) complete four-part serial, the DVD set also includes ITV3's behind-the-scenes documentary.
