Rather unusually, considering the often dark nature of the television series, the novelisations based on episodes were all aimed at the "Young Adult" market. However, of the 201 episodes produced, these novelisations only covered 27 of them.

Anyone attempting to collect every single X-Files novelisation should also be aware of a series of six licensed books which started out as behind-the-scenes reference books, and which eventually transformed into a series of extremely detailed collections of plot synopses that included much of the dialogue from each episode.

The first two books were The Truth is Out There and Trust No One, and it is these two volumes which include the majority of the behind-the-scenes information. I Want to Believe was the first volume to contain the in-depth synopses and covered Season Four. Each episode synopsis took up between 10-14 pages and also included details of the cast, settings, brief episode credits and a smattering of facts about the episode in question. Resist or Serve and The End and the Beginning covered all of the episodes from Seasons Five and Six (although bizarrely not the movie Fight the Future), with the final volume being All Things, which covered Season Seven.

Further details of the six books can be found on the X-Files: Introduction page.

A man who calls himself "Pusher" confesses to committing fourteen perfect murders — by making them all look like suicides. Pusher has too much specific crime-scene information to be bluffing, but the question remains: how did he do it? FBI Special Agent Scully thinks the man is an egomaniac — and a liar. Her partner, Mulder, has a different explanation. He thinks that Pusher is a bizarre homicidal assassin who uses such powerful mind control that he can convince his victims to kill themselves. But without a scrap of evidence, there's only one way for Mulder to prove his theory. He has to go up against Pusher himself...

Down in the Depths

When Fox Mulder is sent to investigate a body that has been found floating in the sewers of Newark, New Jersey, he's insulted by the ordinary nature of the case. But when several sewer workers are attacked by a vicious sludge-dwelling monster, Mulder believes that something sinister is at work.

He and his partner, Scully, soon find themselves on the slimy tail of a creature that is as disgusting as it is dangerous. Half-man, half-parasite, it has been attacking humans — and leaving its larvae behind to feed on their flesh. Mulder and Scully must find out where the creature came from — and put a stop to its reproductive killing spree...

Notes
  • Despite being advertised, and indeed listed on sites such as Amazon.com, the book was never published. From the details available, it would apparently have contained novelisations of the Season Two episodes Duane Barry, Ascension and One Breath, which dealt with Scully's abduction and return. An audiobook version, supposedly to be read by Gillian Anderson, was also advertised for release in July 1998. Like the book, it was never actually produced.
