One of the highlights of the 1980s, the original two V mini-series saw the arrival of the alien Visitors over the major capitals of the world in their giant saucers (over a decade before Independence Day 'borrowed' the idea...), bringing with them promises of advanced medicines and technologies. Unsurprisingly, they weren't friendly and a resistance movement soon sprang up against them to free the Earth from their grip, with the action being centred on the Los Angeles Resistance.

The follow-up weekly series was fun for the first few weeks but soon tailed off into soap-style unbelievability.

In the UK, the first mini-series (and also its sequel The Final Battle) were shown on ITV against the Los Angeles Olympic Games to great acclaim and even greater ratings.

A completely new take on V, with completely different characters and no involvement from series creator Kenneth Johnson, was produced by ABC in 2009, with a second and final season following in 2011. Like the original weekly series, production once again came to an end with a cliffhanger which was never to be resolved.

TRY TO RESIST

They arrived — tens of thousands of extraterrestrial beings — in huge spaceships the size of a modern metropolis. They came from a dying planet.

All they wanted, in exchange for their vast knowledge of science and technology, was a small share of the Earth's natural resources. Theirs was a mission of peace...and mankind believed them. Until they began to multiply into an army of alien invaders. Until men, women and children — entire cities — began to vanish from the Earth. Until the horrifying reality behind their mission of peace — a reign of terror reminiscent of Nazi Germany on a global scale — created the human imperative...

RESIST OR PERISH
Notes
  • A novelisation of both the original V mini-series and its sequel, The Final Battle. Like many novelisations, it differs in numerous respects from what actually appeared on television, either due to being based on earlier drafts of the scripts or just to keep the length of the book under control. The Pinnacle edition was released the same month as The Final Battle was broadcast on NBC.
  • The book is split roughly fifty-fifty between the two mini-series, with the second half said to take place some four months after the conclusion of V.
  • Ann Crispin has also written a number of original Star Trek novels, including the enormously popular Yesterday's Son and it's sequel, Time for Yesterday.
  • Diane Frolov would go on to to be one of the main script writers for Kenneth Johnson's televison version of Alien Nation, while Harry and Renee Longstreet would later contribute to the produced version of the Alien Nation TV movie Body and Soul as well as scripting The Udara Legacy in 1996.

FROM THE RIVETING TELEVISION MINISERIES, A TERRIFYING NOVEL OF ALIEN INVASION.

Kenneth Johnson's Warner Bros. television miniseries V swept the nation and drew in hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. Now, the novel V is finally back in print.

The alien visitors arrive without warning, their enormous spaceships hovering over fifty of the world's major cities. Their tale of an imperiled homeworld beguiles us. Their human appearance and soothing human voices reassure us. Their calm promises of friendship and mutual aid lull us. The aliens fool everyone — until a suspicious journalist and a Holocaust survivor point out the chilling signs that the Visitors aren't nearly as friendly as they seem.

As with so many oppressive regimes of Earth's past and present, an ill-informed, propogandized populace becomes complicit in its own subjugation, turning a blind eye to atrocities committed by their tyrannical overlords. A small band of resistance fighters who know the aliens' true nature must stand up for all of humanity.

With nonstop action, political intrigue, and memorable characters, V is a fast-paced thriller, a cautionary tale as chillingly effective today as when first published.

INCLUDES AN ALL-NEW, NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN ENDING.
Notes
V: The Second Generation
  • The early twenty-first century saw V's creator, Kenneth Johnson, scripting a brand new mini-series which he hoped would pick up the story after the events of the original V mini-series — both The Final Battle and the subsequent weekly V series had been produced without his input, so the new script completely ignored the events of those stories.

Sadly, none of the US networks were interested in the concept, and Johnson subsequently novelised his unused scripts as V: The Second Generation, which was published in October 2007.

A year later Tor re-released the original V novelisation under the revised title V: The Original Miniseries, and this would be exactly what it said on its cover, with the novelised sections of The Final Battle being completely excised and a new Epilogue added, which introduced a number of the characters who would be the focus of The Second Generation.

A GREAT PROMISE HAS BEEN BROKEN...

A GREAT HOPE STILL LIVES...

But even as the grip tightens, resistance lives. And as long as one human soul fights back, hope remains alive.

Notes
  • East Coast Crisis was the first original novel based on V, and was released the month before the regular weekly series began on NBC. Unlike later novels in the series, it was rather longer than would become standard, running to just over three-hundred pages.
  • The characters of Pete Forsythe and Lauren Stewart later re-appeared in Howard Weinstein's solo book Path to Conquest, published as part of the series of V books from Tor in 1987.
  • The events of the book take place over the same period as the events in the two mini-series, from the arrival of the Visitors in V through to the dispersal of the red dust in The Final Battle.
  • East Coast Crisis was the first of three V novels which Howard Weinstein would be credited for, with Prisoners and Pawns and Path to Conquest following in 1985 and 1988 respectively. He would go on to write a number of original novels based on both Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, and is also known for scripting The Pirates of Orion, the opening episode from the second and final season of the animated Star Trek series. The latter was novelised by Alan Dean Foster in 1975 for Star Trek: Log Five.

THE FINAL BATTLE IS OVER —
OR IS IT?

The alien stranglehold on Earth has been broken, and the resistance has triumphed. Diana uses her powers to escape from her captors. The alarm is raised, and the familiar beat of fear rises in the heart of the resistance. Diana must be stopped.

Resistance member Donovan sets off in the alien Mother Ship in pursuit of the fleeing Diana, praying that he will be able to capture or destroy her before she can reach alien forces and trigger another invasion of Earth. During Donovan's absence, the victory continues to unravel. And so, the battle once won, must start again...

V
Notes
  • The Pursuit of Diana is one of the few books to focus on the Los Angeles Resistance, as seen in the television series, and picks up the action immediately after the conclusion of The Final Battle. However, as will be become immediately obvious to anyone reading the book, having a story in which Mike Donovan chases after Diana immediately puts the book series in conflict with the weekly television series which had begun just a month earlier. The opening episode, Liberation Day, would also see Donovan chasing after Diana, but in the TV episode she would be caught relatively quickly, with the story then skipping forward to her trial a year later.
  • The Pursuit of Diana was the first of three V novels which Allen Wold would contribute to the series, with The Crivit Experiment and Below the Threshold following in 1985 and 1988 respectively.
  • Doctor Who and the Horror of Fang Rock
  • Page 59 sees several members of the LA Resistance sitting down to watch a television news bulletin, which is immediately followed by an episode of Doctor Who, or Dr. Who as Allen Wold would have it. Enter Robert Maxwell and Claire Bryant, "just as Tom Baker was outwitting some kind of slime monster with the help of a scantily clad huntress".

From the limited information available, the "scantily clad huntress" can only be Leela (Louise Jameson), and the story itself must be Horror of Fang Rock, which opened Season 15 of the series in September 1977 and involved a stranded Rutan which could certainly be described, in its natural form, as "a slime monster".

And there's more. By checking the airdates at BroadWCast, we can see that Horror of Fang Rock received its debut broadcast on KCET in Los Angeles at 1730 on Saturday 26 May 1984, which would have been just eighteen days after the concluding installment of The Final Battle was broadcast by NBC.

So, as well as tieing in reasonably well with the events of The Final Battle — assuming it to have taken place in early May 1984 — we can safely assume that Allen Wold was a Doctor Who viewer.

Notes

THE BEAST IS LOOSE

A new Alien plot has been hatched — as vicious and inhuman as the Visitors themselves. In the mountains of North Carolina, their top biologists, led by the coldly brutal Visitor Leon, are breeding crivits — a new life form of great power, appetite, and ferocity, which burrow in the sand waits to pounce, destroy, and devour. The Visitor plan is to turn them loose in great numbers up and down the eastern beach coasts — where they can disrupt communications and kill thousands of people.

Scientist Mark Casey, with the aid of some resistance-inspired students, has uncovered the scheme but cannot locate the secret breeding grounds. For that he needs the help of the locals — who distrust him and his fellow outsiders as much as the deadly Visitors!
Notes
  • Crivits had originally been created for Breakout, the third episode of the weekly V television series. However, as if occassionally the case with American television series, the episode was omitted from the original run, resulting in various plot strands being picked up in a slightly different manner in Deception, which by default became the third episode.

Breakout was eventually screened by NBC in May 1985 after the other eighteen episodes had been shown, finally giving viewers a chance to see Mike Donovan and Ham Tyler trying to escape from a prison camp surrounded by crivits. Concidentally, this would be the same month in which The Crivit Experiment was published by Pinnacle.

  • As the titles to the two available editions should suggest, To Conquer the Throne was actually set in the UK, one of the few books in the series which would concentrate on events outside the United States. See also The Alien Swordmaster.

The Visitor juggernaut has been slowed by a toxin that is fatal to the reptilian invaders while not harming Earth-born life, but the Visitors will allow nothing to stand between them and the defeat of humanity. And their strike into the Pacific Northwest seems to have a way to counteract the toxin. As city after city falls and the human death-toll mounts, Ruth Hogan, a free-spirited artist, and Hadad, a Visitor opposed to the invasion, desperately try to organize resistance — while keeping one step ahead of hunters sent by a Visitor High Command that knows they are the only ones who can stop the final Visitor victory.

TWENTY YEARS AGO THE EARTH WAS TAKEN.
NOW IT'S TIME TO TAKE IT BACK

Hiding their reptilian nature beneath fake human skin, the Visitors have brought many benefits to humankind and seduced a majority of the people into believing The Big Lie: that they will be the saviors of Earth. But in truth they are draining our oceans and subjugating our people. A small but determined human Resistance has fought them for more than twenty years, but without more aid, their cause is hopeless. Then, at their darkest hour, the Resistance discovers new allies who have come to help...or have they?

V: The Second Generation is a tense, thrilling novel of a nightmarish wartime occupation. It explores how the enormous pressures of such an ordeal can bring out the worst — or the most heroic — in human nature.

"This pulse-pounding novel will keep readers riveted as it rockets toward a stunning conclusion both satisfying and utterly unexpected." — Tomorrow's Entertainment
Notes
  • The Second Generation was the first new V novel since 1988, and also the first to have been written by Kenneth Johnson, who created and wrote the original television mini-series. However, anyone expecting things to carry on from the conclusion of the television series may be disappointed.

Johnson wasn't involved with either the second TV mini-series, The Final Battle, or the 1984/5 television series which followed. And as he has often been quoted as not being a fan of either follow-up, he stuck to his guns and ignored them completely. The Second Generation is, quite literally, a sequel to the original two-part V mini-series which aired in 1983.
  • Johnson's The Second Generation wasn't the first attempt at trying to move the story on from where it had been left in 1985. J Michael Straczynski, now best known for creating and writing much of Babylon 5, had been commissioned in the late-1980s to write a sequel mini-series which would have pick up the story some years on from the end of the weekly television series. Although not produced, the first three acts of V: The Next Chapter, or The Rebirth as the opening episode was titled, have been made available for reading online with Straczynski's permission.

Blake's 7 Annual 1979

Sapphire and Steel Annual 1981
  • Like other TV tie-in annuals from World, the V Annual 1986 was aimed squarely at children, and was released in the autumn of 1985 in time for the Christmas market. It was the only such volume to be published by World, followed the same format as the yearly Doctor Who Annual and those which had earlier been based on the likes of Space: 1999, Blake's 7 and Sapphire and Steel.

As well as seven original stories — all liberally illustrated with new artwork — the V Annual also included a number of space-themed quiz and puzzle pages, a single-page on Komodo dragons, and a very basic six-page comic strip titled Nightmare. And for the added benefit of the annual's intended audience, many of whom wouldn't have been allowed to have watched the two mini-series when they were screened on ITV in the summer of 1984, a two-page feature at the very front of the publication, titled Fight or Die, introduced the main characters and explained the background story.

At this point, and mainly for the benefit of anyone living outside the UK, it should be mentioned that annuals seem to be a peculiarly British tradition. Often based on existing properties (i.e. films, television programmes, cartoons and comics), titles are released during the summer and autumn and generally have the following year's date on the cover. The physical format of most releases is broadly the same: a hardcover roughly 27cm by 20cm, although it's not uncommon to see examples which are larger (the Doctor Who and Space: 1999 annuals for 1977 being particularly irritating examples) and sometimes smaller. Between the covers, you can find anything from between fifty and a hundred pages of content. The V Annual is typical of those from the time, weighing in at a meagre sixty-four pages.

Prospective collectors should note that as most annuals are primarily intended for the Christmas marker, many titles will have the price on the bottom right-hand corner of the first page inside the front cover and this will usually be in a small triangle to allow purchasers to cut it out, and hence prevent the intended recipient from knowing the price of the present. This can obviously affect the value of some annuals quite considerably in later years, so look out for any references to annuals being "unclipped" or "price clipped".
  • All of the fictional content in the V Annual is set after the events of The Final Battle.
