Long ago, even before the days of myth and legend, our worlds belonged to them. Now they want them back...

Captain Kirk is stunned when the Federation receives an urgent plea for help — from the Klingon Empire. A mysterious starship has invaded Klingon space and resisted all their efforts to destroy it. Establishing contact with the stranger's ship, Kirk discovers that it is only the vanguard of a vast alien fleet obsessed with conquering the Klingons, the Federation, the Romulans, and all who dwell in the space that was once their own.

The Invasion has begun...

Timshel was once the vacation spot of the galaxy, full of culture, natural beauty, and friendly, hospitable inhabitants. But now Timshel has cut itself off from the universe. No one is allowed to enter or leave. Concerned, the Federation has sent agents to investigate, but none have returned.

Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are shocked to discover the truth: the people of Timshel have succumbed to an insidious new technology that guarantees every citizen total pleasure, a soul-destroying ecstasy that has enslaved their entire civilization. Kirk and Spock have faced many threats before, but now they face the most seductive menace of all: perfect happiness.

And the rest of the Federation may soon fall under the irresistible control of the Joy Machine.
Notes
  • The Joy Machine started life as a story outline for the original Star Trek television series from Theodore Sturgeon, who had previously scripted Shore Leave and Amok Time for Seasons 1 and 2 respectively. Despite getting as far as a draft script, albeit written by Meyer Dolinsky rather than Sturgeon, the story was dropped.
  • The Joy Machine is the only Star Trek book to have been written by James Gunn.

Cadet David Forester had made it to Starfleet Academy's Command School, where the starship captains of the future are trained on mission simulators that make you feel as if you are really on the bridge of a Federation starship. But there's trouble at the Academy — sabotage, conflict, and a series of "accidents" throw Forester's team of cadets into a scramble for their very lives.

Determined to save his crew, Forester rushes to stop a plot to destroy the academy itself, and is thrust into a mission with Starfleet legends Captain James T. Kirk, Captain Hikaru Sulu and Commander Pavel Chekov. Together they must find the cause behind a series of ever deadlier raids on Federation outposts by an unknown enemy.

"A dramatic tale, one that answers long-standing questions about Spock's life choices. Fascinating!" — Leonard Nimoy

Just over a year ago, Captain James T. Kirk was lost in the Nexus while saving the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-B from destruction. Aboard the science ship Intrepid II, Captain Spock, commanding some of his old crewmates, must face the loss of his closest friend. But while still in mourning for one friend he must come to the aid of another.

Spock's childhood friend David Rabin, now a captain, has been assigned to a harsh desert world much like Vulcan, where the Federation is determined to protect the lives of the inhabitants. But Rabin's efforts are being sabotaged and he has asked for Spock's help against the unknown forces that may destroy the society he has come to save.

While reflecting on his youthful adventure with Rabin — the adventure that set him on the path to Starfleet — Spock joins with him to face an enemy out of their shared past and confront deadly Romulan treachery. In the process, Spock will decide if the path of his life now leads back toward the family traditions he had once sought to escape.

"Comprehensively excellent, marked by brisk pacing, lovely dry wit, gripping action scenes, detailed world building...insightful handling of the classic characters and inventive creation of new ones... Even non-trekker readers unfamiliar with the whole backstory will appreciate this bright addition...and dedicated fans will find it a feast." — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Continuing the powerful story of Jim Kirk's lost friend, the man who helped shape a Starfleet captain...

Gary Mitchell is dead, killed by his best friend for the sake of his ship. As Captain Kirk returns home in sadness, he recalls the first time he held Gary's life in his hands: Seven years earlier, the two men have been assigned to the U.S.S. Constitution, Gary as chief navigator and Kirk as second officer, when the starship comes to the defense of an alien world menaced by ruthless invaders. An early attack leaves both the captain and the first officer in comas, and Jim Kirk must take command for the first time. He finds himself with only one chance to defeat the heavily armed enemy — but the cost may be Gary Mitchell's life!

"At once a superior Star Trek story and a first-rate SF novel in the same package, and a volume that deserves serious attention from voters for the [science fiction] genre's various awards."
Amazing Stories

2239. Now a diplomat for the United Federation of Planets, Spock agrees to a bonding with Saavik, his former protégé and an accomplished Starfleet officer in her own right. More than a betrothal but less than a wedding, the sacred Vulcan rite is attended by both Spock's father, Sarek, and a nervous young Starlet officer named Jean-Luc Picard.

Plans for the consummation of the pair's union are thrown off course when Spock receives a top-secret communication that lures him into the heart of the Romulan empire. Enmeshed in the treacherous political intrigues of the Romulan capital, undone by a fire that grows ever hotter within his blood, Spock must use all his logic and experience to survive a crisis that will ultimately determine the fates of empires!

"Lots of fan-pleasing moments...Sherman and Shwartz smoothly connect the dots between the bits of the Star Trek universe that have always deserved closer attention."
The New York Post

"Opening some years after Sherman and Shwartz's superb Vulcan's Forge concluded, this sequel is even better."
