Based on Cyborg by Martin Caidin, The Six Million Dollar Man starred Lee Majors as Colonel Steve Austin, a NASA test pilot who is seriously injured when the plane he is flying crashes, and who has both legs, an arm and an eye replaced by cybernetic implants. He subsequently works for Oscar Goldman at the Office of Strategic Investigations (OSI) on various dangerous assignments.

The Bionic Woman, a spin-off series starring Lindsay Wagner, was launched in 1976.

Three TV movies featuring both Majors and Wagner were later produced between 1989 and 1994.

LEGEND FROM ANOTHER TIME

Battle Mountain has become the scene of highly important seismological investigations. But up there, close to Goldman's research team, a monstrous creature waited and watched — it was none other than Sasquatch, better known as Bigfoot, the mysterious being of Indian legend than roams the timberline. Could the time-worn legend have come true? Or was there a more sinister explanation linking the beast's savage reappearance with the lone group hidden in the forest who displayed such a keen interest in Steve Austin's phenomenal bionic powers? The answer lay somewhere in the mountainside. And Steve was the only person equipped to discover and exterminate it.

Original Novels

It should be noted that the following four novels are not based on the Six Million Dollar Man television series, but are instead Martin Caidin's series of original novels featuring the character of Steve Austin.

Caidin's original novel, Cyborg, was the basis for the Six Million Dollar Man television series (specifically the feature-length pilot in March 1973), and his first two books, Cyborg and Operation Nuke, were issued in paperback as tie-ins to the television series — Cyborg itself having first been released in paperback in 1972. To further confuse matters, books three and four, High Crystal and Cyborg IV, were first released in paperback as part of Warner Books' Six Million Dollar Man series.

Details of all four are included here for interest only, and only the first US paperback editions are noted.

STEVE AUSTIN, CYBORG, IS THE WORLD'S DEADLIEST WEAPON

All the resources of N.A.S.A., The Pentagon, and Government Money put the broken pieces of Lt. Col. Steve Austin's shattered body together again. He came out of it more perfect than human. Better than new. A deadly, unstoppable weapon. Now all he needed was to find some human emotion in the tangle of plastic, wire, and atomic metal that was fused to the remains of his flesh...
Notes
  • The second paperback edition of Cyborg, published in 1974, was released as a tie-in to the Six Million Dollar Man television series starring Lee Majors, the pilot for which was broadcast on ABC in March 1973, and which was based on Cyborg.

For completeness, details are also included above of the original 1972 paperback release from Warner Paperback Library.

STEVE AUSTIN, CYBORG, IS THE WORLD'S DEADLIEST WEAPON

When Steve Austin, astronaut, crashed from the skies, he woke to find himself a fragment of a man — no legs, one arm, one eye. But Science rebuilt his body, giving him physical powers no other man possessed.

Now, the world is threatened by a syndicate that sells nuclear destruction to the highest bidder. And Steve Austin who, from the moon, saw the Earth as fragile and precious, is the one man who can save that world from the ultimate blackmail of our times.

IS THIS A SECRET LINK TO THE CHARIOTS OF THE GODS?

High in the Andes is an impossible highway, more than two miles above sea level, built of rocks smooth as marble. Who built it? How were such huge slabs of rock lifted to such heights? What forces were used to fuse them into an unsegmented strip? No modern man has explored these mountains; what ancient culture flourished here and performed such marvels?

Only Steve Austin can lead an expedition into this hostile land. Only the bionics man can hack his way through the fields of razor-sharp grass, scale the sheer rock cliffs and fly the turbulent skies from mountain ledge to mountain top where the source of the secret energy is hidden.
Notes
  • Despite its only connection with the Six Million Dollar Man television series being the character of Steve Austin, the paperback edition of Martin Caidin's High Crystal was released as part of Warner Books' Six Million Dollar Man book series. The book had originally been published in hardback in 1974.

MAN-SHIP!

Never before has there been a bionics man like Steve Austin — his human capabilities enhanced by electronic reconstruction of his body.

Never before could there be such an aeronautic experiment plugging the perceptions of a man into the controls of a spaceship. When the ship rolls, it is Steve Austin rolling in space. When cosmic rays hit the plane's shell, Steve feels them as though they were pelting his own skin.

Dangerous! Terrifying! But Steve must accept the challenge to outmaneuver an enemy in the race for space supremacy.
Notes
  • Like High Crystal, Cyborg IV was not based on the Six Million Dollar Man television series, but its paperback release was published as part of Warner Books' Six Million Dollar Man book series. The book had originally been published in hardback in 1975.
