A number of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. novels were released in the UK before being released in the United States. As only sixteen of the twenty-three were released in the UK, and were also numbered differently, they are therefore listed on this website in the order in which they were published in the United States.

Michael Avallone's novel was released in the UK at a time when The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was enjoying enormous success on BBC1. Season 1 had finished early in December 1965 and the BBC then went straight on into Season 2 a week later — arguably the strongest run of the entire series. Season 3 then began in the October, although in an unusual move the decision was taken to show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the spin-off series The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. on alternate weeks, at the end of which, in November 1967, they launched straight into the fourth and final season. Throughout, the episodes used as the basis for the eight "movies" were omitted.
Careful observation of the front cover image may have you wondering why there are four white circles in the centre. Well, rather than have four white circles that looked vaguely like bullet holes, the publishers went one step further and actually punched them out. Needless to say, nearly fifty years later copies with pristine holes are probably not that common!

Was it a madman's hoax, or...?
Napoleon Solo was wondering as he watched the members of a distinguished scientific convention cluster angrily around Sarah O'Rourke, beautiful niece of the eccentric Irish biochemist "King Mike" O'Rourke. The paper which Sarah had brought to the convention was gibberish, utter nonsense — or so it seemed at first.
Then suddenly Napoleon heard the deadly cough of a silenced pistol, and the scientist standing next to Sarah jerked and slumped to the floor, dead. As Sarah screamed and Napoleon sprinted to her side, the thought that leaped into his head was:
No one commits murder for a hoax!

THE BODY HAD BEEN DRAINED OF BLOOD....
In a remote area of the Transylvanian Alps, an U.N.C.L.E. agent had been killed in mysterious circumstances. The man's footprints in the snow led up to the base of the tree where he had been killed, but there were no pursuing tracks, no clues at all as to what doom had overtaken him.
There were only two small holes in the neck, and a complete absence of blood.
Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin didn't believe in vampires — but as they investigated their fellow-agent's death they were forced again and again to wonder if perhaps the old terrors of the region had more reality than the world would like to think...

Notes
- The Monster Wheel Affair is notorious for featuring an in-joke on the contents page.
As with many TV tie-in series, the authors of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. books were paid a flat fee for their work and received no royalties. As a slight dig at this situation, David McDaniel named the chapters so that, when read downwards on the contents page, the initial letter of each chapter title spells "A A WYNN IS A TIGHTWAD" — a reference to the then publisher of Ace Books.

DEADLY HATRED
THREATENED ILLYA AND NAPOLEON
FROM ALL SIDES...
It seemed incredible that an intelligent man like Dr. Richard Armden could turn violently against U.N.C.L.E. for no apparent reason. Dr. Armden was a valued scientific advisor for U.N.C.L.E., but now he refused to have anything to do with the organization. "Thieving, Communistic, war-mongering murderers!" he called Illya and Napoleon.
Baffled, the two agents tried to question Dr. Armden's colleagues in this small university town... and met the same implacable hatred and threats from all of them.
It couldn't be coincidence — THRUSH must have discovered a new method of winning over the minds of scientists to their cause. But how did they do it? And how could U.N.C.L.E. fight it?

PRELUDE TO WORLD CONQUEST
As Napoleon and Illya watched the filmed interrogation of a THRUSH agent, Waverly explained, "This man has revealed that he was distributing information to THRUSH investors on gold stocks in Africa. When he said to buy or sell, they did — and at the price he specified."
"But that isn't illegal," Solo protested.
"Not in itself," said Waverly. But THRUSH's plan is an international conspiracy, originating in England, to manipulate stocks in this country by using the five-hour time difference between London and New York. They seem very close to cornering the market on the gold reserves of one of the new African nations. Can you imagine what THRUSH could do with that kind of power in the explosive situation in Africa?"
As the two U.N.C.L.E. agents nodded grimly, Waverly said, "Then you know why the safety of the world may depend on stopping THRUSH's scheme!"

LINE OF DUTY
U.N.C.L.E.'s dossier on Joseph King said their former Lab Chief had been killed during a field test of his Particle Accelerator Rifle, a very deadly new weapon that backfired on him. There was no doubt about his death or its circumstances.
But could he somehow have escaped from the explosion and defected to THRUSH, taking the secrets of that weapon with him? Could he now be fighting treacherously for a position of power in THRUSH, using the P.A.R. against his rivals?
The head of THRUSH's San Francisco satrap claimed that was true, and he had voluntarily walked into U.N.C.L.E. Headquarters to ask for help against King. Obviously U.N.C.L.E. had to act — but Napoleon and Illya knew they would be facing sudden death from all sides.

The Unfair Fare Affair is an original novel.
Back Cover Blurb
U.N.C.L.E. would probably never have been drawn into the bizarre affair of the criminals' escape network if Mr. Waverly hadn't felt hungry in Holland.
Even afterwards, Napoleon Solo had to chase half across Europe and Illya Kuryakin was forced to pose as a murderer before they realised they were pitting their wits against the ruthless cunning and greed of a single man whose enterprise knew no limits.
But then a more sinister organisation showed interest in a take-over bid...
There were girls involved also — two of them, both beautiful in their way. The only thing was: which of these birds was the THRUSH?

LOVE GODDESS...
OR MODERN MEDUSA?
Napoleon Solo was stunned when he first saw the exquisite Countess Anne-Marie Louise de St.-Denis in her private estate on the isle of Corfu. She was the head of the world-famous St.-Denis Laboratory in Paris, where scientific miracles built beauty to order, but Napoleon hadn't expected her to be her own company's best testimonial.
Perhaps this assignment would be more pleasant than he expected. Or perhaps more dangerous — for U.N.C.L.E. suspected that the lovely Countess de St.-Denis was more than she seemed, that she was in fact the brains behind a mysterious, and very deadly, new THRUSH plot...

A FORTUNE FOR
WORLD CONQUEST
It began when a man walked into a bar and ordered a beer that he was never to drink — for moments later he saw two other men enter, and he panicked and ran headlong out the door, across the street... and under the wheels of a truck.
When he was hit, hundreds of bank notes flew all over the street, a small fortune in currency. And all of it was counterfeit.
But when U.N.C.L.E. investigated the case they found much more than just counterfeiters at work. Instead, it was a THRUSH plan to destroy the economic and political foundations of Europe — and it looked as though it was going to succeed...

MYSTERY
IN THE
SKIES
Five major air crashes in two months — the cause of all of them a complete mystery. In each case the plane's instruments were working perfectly, the crew was in command and ground control in contact. Then the plane would suddenly nosedive into the runway as it came in to land, killing most of the passengers. Those who weren't killed outright died mysterious deaths shortly after.
Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin hurried to Nice to follow a trail that led unavoidably to THRUSH — and to a monstrous master-plan that was moving steadily toward the point of no return...
