Man from Atlantis

(United States | NBC | 1977 — 1978)

Man from Atlantis
Series Background

Man from Atlantis was an underwater action series, with future Dallas star Patrick Duffy playing Mark Harris, the water-breathing hero from the lost city of Atlantis.

Unusually, the series began as four TV movies which proved so successful that a full season was promptly commissioned by NBC.

Needless to say, the law of diminishing returns immediately kicked in and the show should be considered fortunate to have lasted for a full seventeen episodes.

MARK HARRIS LOOKED LIKE A MAN...

But seven miles below the surface — without diving gear or breathing apparatus — he moved along the ocean floor like the sea-being he was. Before him a door opened in the side of an underwater mountain to reveal a sinister threat to the terrestrial world.

A power-hungry genius had lured the best scientific minds in the world to his secret laboratory in the impenetrable depths of the sea. There he had created a computerized war machine which could wipe out life on earth and establish him king of an underwater empire.

Only Mark Harris could penetrate his infernal habitat to save life on earth... the earth where man breathed air... the earth which was not his home.

SUPERMAN FROM UNDER THE SEA

They found him on a lonely Pacific shore and nursed him back to life, observed him, wondered at him. Without water for his gill-like lungs, his shore life is limited to a few hours, but under the waves he is lightning fast, immensely powerful — a seabound superman.

He has no name, so they call him Mark Harris. The Man from Atlantis — the phenomenon who will become the world's first underwater secret agent.

Here is the Man from Atlantis' perilous first mission. Mark's task: to recover a top-secret, fantastically sophisticated deep-diving submarine from 35,000 feet beneath the sea — and to defeat a madman plotting the destruction of the world from a hideout on the ocean floor...

AN UNCANNY SCREAM BROKE THE SILENCE OF THE DEEP

The dread moment had arrived. A space probe had carried back alien spores. Active, intelligent, indestructible, they were unlike anything science had known before. Invading human bodies, creating havoc and madness, they made Mark Harris know he would serve their will. The alternative was too overwhelming to consider — not just for him, for all mankind. The spores had come. The earth was their hostage. There was only one way to send them back — but time was running out...

Notes
  • Extremely unusually, the final two Man from Atlantis books would actually play down their connection with the television seris and omitted the title of the series from the cover and spine. The only other notable example of this happening is the final five books in Virgin Publishing's New Adventures range of Doctor Who novels, which were released in the months leading up to the end of their license in 1997.
