Airwolf was one of the classic 'vehicle' shows of the 1980s, in this case featuring a high-tech helicopter (not to be confused with
Blue Thunder) piloted by the enigmatic
Stringfellow Hawke (Jan-Michael Vincent), whose brother was missing in Vietnam.
The show ran for three seasons before being axed by
CBS, although it was subsequently resurrected in a dumbed-down version a year later for the
USA Network — principally to provide enough extra episodes for the series to go into syndication.
The one-season revival featured the elusive
St John Hawke (Barry Van Dyke) rather than his brother
Stringfellow (who was killed off in the opening episode), and should probably be avoided at all costs.
The series was created by Donald Bellisario who also had great success with
Magnum PI,
Quantum Leap and
JAG.
