With their life support system in danger, Moon Base Alpha personnel mount a desperate search for Tiranium, the precious mineral essential to their survival.
Their search takes them to the planet Psychon where they fall into the ruthless hands of its despotic ruler, Mentor. Then at last release comes from an unexpected quarter — Mentor's beautiful and rebellious daughter, Maya. - Planets of Peril was the first of five novelisations based on Season Two of Space: 1999 which would be released by Star Books, in the process novelising nineteen of the twenty-four episodes. However, Warner Books in the United States put out a sixth title, The Edge of the Infinite, which novelised a further four episodes. Once again this was penned by Michael Butterworth. The only episode not to be novelised in the 1970s was The Taybor, although Butterworth would be called upon to rectify the situation when Powys Media published the limited edition Year Two omnibus in 2006.
- The Metamorph was also novelised in Italy by Gianni Padoan for Gli Alieni Dai Mille Volti. The A-B Chrysalis was novelised in Il Ritorni Degli Ibernati, while New Adam, New Eve was in Gli Stregoni Del Cosmo.
- Planets of Peril was reprinted in 2006 as part of the limited edition Year Two omnibus from Powys Media.
