General Notes
- Rupert Laight had previously written Revenge of the Slitheen one of the four Sarah Jane Adventures novelisations released in 2007.
- Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? was published at the same time as the novelisations based on The Lost Boy, The Last Sontaran and The Day of the Clown.
- Although never explicity stated in the television story, the character of the Trickster is widely considered to be the Black Guardian, who first featured in Doctor Who in the 1979 story The Armageddon Factor, before returning in Mawdryn Undead, Terminus and Enlightenment in 1983.
The Graske had previously only been seen in Attack of the Graske, an interactive adventure available to satellite viewers of BBC One via the red button after The Christmas Invasion, the Christmas 2005 episode of Doctor Who.
Both characters would return in The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith, the penultimate story in Season 2 of The Sarah Jane Adventures.
