- Day of the Clown was published at the same time as the novelisations based on Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?, The Last Sontaran and The Lost Boy.
- Phil Ford had previously written the novelisation of The Eye of the Gorgon from Season 1, as well as writing the original Torchwood novel Skypoint, which was published a month before Day of the Clown.
