Bernice Summerfield first appeared in Paul Cornell's
Love and War, a novel in
Virgin Publishing's
New Adventures range of original
Doctor Who books. When the company lost the licence to produce
Doctor Who fiction in 1997, it was decided that
Benny would be made the lead character.
The
New Adventures ceased publication in December 1999, but
Benny was revived the following year in a series of original novel and audio dramas from
Big Finish Productions.
A number of anthologies and collections of original novellas have also been released by the company.

Don't ever annoy the Fifth Axis. They might throw you into the Glass Prison on Deirbhile — and then throw away the key.
Once you're inside, there's nowhere to hide. They can see your every movement. They control you. You're going to be watched for the rest of your life, wherever you go, whoever you are. Even if you're a professor of archaeology. Even if you're a friend of the famous Irving Braxiatel, and you've written several popular coffee-table books.
Even if you're pregnant. Even if your baby's due any day now.
But, of course, they know all about your baby.
And they're planning to take it away.
That is, if the loony cultists you're locked up with don't get it first.
Notes
- Sadly, Professor Bernice Summerfield and the Glass Prison was the last book in the regular range of paperback novels due to low sales. All was not lost for fans, however, as the audio adventures continued to be released on a regular basis by Big Finish and the first in what was initially a series of annual hardback anthologies was to be released in the October under the title A Life of Surprises.

Back Cover Blurb
Professor Bernice Summerfield, interstellar archaeologist, adventurer, romantic and drinker, has had either one very big life or a number of only slightly smaller ones.
This anthology contains stories from many times and places across her long career, ranging from the starkly dramatic, through the thrilling, to the hilarious.
It links Bernice to her roots, as well as sending her forward into new adventures. And it celebrates a decade of Bernice in print. Cheers!

Notes
- A Life of Surprises was the first of a new range of hardback books featuring Bernice Summerfield, after the sales of the previous paperback series were insufficient for the range to continue. The book was released to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Benny's first appearance in the Doctor Who novel Love and War.
- The title to the book is something of a pun as Bernice's middle name is Surprise.
- One unique aspect of A Life of Surprises was that a competition was launched via the Down Among the Dead Men Yahoo group for a previously unpublished author to get into print. The eventual winner was Mark Stevens with Setting Stone.
