No one can escape from the power of the stones.

The standing stones encirled the village of Milbury.

There were 53 stones. When Matthew and his father, Adam, an astrophysicist, arrived in Milbury, there were 53 people in the village.

"And we know all about supernovae — how they are formed, what causes them to explode. but Black Holes, with their immense gravitational forces. they're still pretty much of a mystery."

Adam Brake, an astrophysicist, settles with his son Matthew in an ancient English village to study the magnetic property of the prehistoric stones that enclose it, stones found to be aligned to a Black Hole. Meanwhile Matthew has bought in an antique shop a strange picture which seems to depict the same village being struck by a blinding, paralysing light from which only a man and a boy are escaping. The scene proves all too prophetic. Matthew and his father find themselves in a time-trap, another continuum, a present in which the future can only repeat the past. The way back no longer open to them, father and son are forced to use all of their ingenuity and courage to try to re-enter their own time and place.
