Catweazle by Richard Carpenter

Catweazle and the Magic Zodiac by Richard Carpenter

Catweazle appeared briefly on UK television screens for two seasons in the early 1970s. The programme starred Geoffrey Bayldon as the 11th-century wizard who accidentally managed to send himself forward in time, where he befriended a young boy named Carrot. After thirteen episodes he finally managed to return home.

After the success of the first season it was no surprise when, a year later, Catweazle made another unexpected journey forwards in time, this time meeting Cedric Collingford. This second season revolved around the search for the thirteenth sign of the zodiac which Catweazle believed would enable him to return home.

After the series finished Richard Carpenter went on to write a number of other telefantasy series. He created The Ghosts of Motley Hall and Robin of Sherwood as well as writing television adaptations based on several of Mary Norton's Borrowers novels, and I Was a Rat, which was based on the novel by Philip Pullman. He was also responsible for writing several of the most fondly remembered serials for the BBC schools programme Look and ReadCloud Burst and Dark Towers.

Geoffrey Bayldon went on to play the Crowman in Worzel Gummidge and has recently recorded Auld Mortality and A Storm of Angels — two Doctor Who plays for Big Finish Productions in which he plays an alternate version of the First Doctor who never left Gallifrey.

Both seasons of Catweazle have been released on DVD.
