Starring former Callan actor Edward Woodward as crusading journalist Jim Kyle, 1990 was essentially an updated version of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Set in a Britain where the population is under the thumb of the Public Control Department (PCD), Jim Kyle was part of a resistance movement against the harsh regime where food is rationed, identity cards are compulsory, travel is regulated (illegal emigration being a particular concern) and surveillance is commonplace. Kyle's normal adversary was Herbert Skardon (Robert Lang), the controller of the PCD.
Created by Wilfred Greatorex (The Power Game / Secret Army), the series ran for two seasons on BBC2 in the late 1970s and has never been shown in the UK since — something which is rather surprising considering that many of the themes are even more topical today than at the time of its original transmission. Then again, maybe that's exactly why it hasn't been repeated...
None of the sixteen episodes have ever been released on DVD or video, but with the ever increasing number of half-remembered series now arriving on shelves it must surely only be a matter of time.
