Thai Loco-Hauled Sleeping Car Trains

RSR (the state railway of Thailand) still runs overnight sleeper trains in at least 3 directions from Bangkok. There are trains to Chiang Mai, to Khon Kaen and the Laotian border and to Hadyai and into Malaysia to Butterworth (for Penang). Hualompong Station, Bangkok is an interesting, old train shed with a corrugated iron roof. There is an acceptable Japanese/Thai restaurant on the second floor (left side facing the trains) for food and beer before you depart.

Hualompong Station, Bangkok

First, 2nd class ac and non-ac are all available. Second class non-ac is perfectly adequate. In second class, you will be in an open compartment with top and bottom bunks put down on both sides of the aisle. During the daytime, there are facing single seats on both sides of the aisle. The lower berths have the window and are more expensive. In first class, there are two longitudinal berths in separate compartments. Again the lower berth is cheaper.

2nd Class Non-AC Sleeping Carriage

There is a buffet car but many people have food delivered to their seat. It's fun having a beer in the buffet car and watching the world go by.

1st Class AC Sleeper Berth Ticket

All sleeping trains are loco hauled.

Bangkok Noi Station

(from The Bangkok Post 16/1/00)

Future restoration of Bankok Noi Station is planned to turn it into a museum and park and will include a steam train ride like the one that ran on firewood and was used during the reign of King Rama V.

Currently, Bangkok Noi station services only special trains-those taking tourists to see the beauty of Sai Yok waterfall and the River Kwae Bridge in Kanchanaburi province.'

Bangkok Noi Station was built in 1903

During World War 2 Bangkok Noi Station was a Japanese weapons cache and was destroyed by allied bombs

It was restored in 1950.
