Computer Games:  Harpoon - Commander’s Edition Updated

Matrix Games and Advanced Gaming Systems have released another patch for their simulation of modern naval warfare operations, Larry Bond’s Harpoon - Commander’s Edition.  The comprehensive version 2008.044 update adds more units and fixes nearly twenty reported issues. It can be downloaded from the game’s webpages at Matrix.

Computer Games:  Commander - Napoleon at War Released

Matrix Games and Slitherine Strategies have announced that Commander – Napoleon at War, the sequel to Commander - Europe at War, has been released. Commander - Napoleon at War is a strategic level game that covers the Napoleonic Wars.  It features eight campaigns - including a grand campaign that runs from 1808 to 1815.  To find out more visit the games webpages at Matrix.

Computer Games:  In Nomine Updated

Paradox Interactive have released an update for their medieval expansion for Europa Universalis III and Napoleon’s Ambition: In Nomine. The update can be downloaded and installed using the eu3 launcher application in the game’s installation folder. Board Games: Storm Over Stalingrad Released

Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) have published Storm Over Stalingrad.  This is an Eastern Front battalion-level game with simple, but not simplistic rules, designed by Tetsuya Nakamura. Visit the MMP website to find out more.

Computer Games:  John Tiller’s Campaign Series Updated

Matrix Games and Campaign Series Legion have released an update for the WW2 tactical-level title John Tiller’s Campaign Series. The comprehensive version 1.04 update includes the ability to make the version 1.03 assault and visibility rules optional, improved OOBs (orders of battle) and new scenarios for Rising Sun.  The update is available from the Campaign Series webpages at Matrix.

Board Games: Modern Naval Battles - Global Warfare Released

Dan Verssen Games have released another card game: Modern Naval Battles – Global Warfare.  It is inspired by their original 1989 award winning game and its 2 expansions.  The new game features ships from nine different countries (the UK, USA, USSR, France, China, Argentina, Taiwan, Norway and Japan) and improved rules. It has 110 colour ‘Action’ cards and 110 colour ship cards to maximize player’s game options.  Visit the DVG website to find out more.

Board Games: Clash of Monarchs Released

GMT Games have published Clash of Monarchs - The Seven Year’s War in Europe, 1756-1763.  It recreates the struggle between Frederick the Great’s Prussia and its British and Hanoverian allies against Maria Theresa’s Coalition of Austrian, French, Russian, Saxon, Swedish and Holy Roman Empire forces.  Each player directs the effort of one or more of the major powers, plus their minor allies, using the card-driven operations and point-to-point movement system used by many of GMT’s games. Board Games: Successors (3rd Edition) Released

GMT have also published Successors.  It covers the wars between the Macedonian generals that fought over the conquests of Alexander the Great after his death.  Successors was first published in 1995 by Avalon Hill. Some years later a second edition rule book was published. This updated Successors third edition builds on the foundation of the 2nd edition rules - plus expansion cards that appeared in the Boardgamer.  Visit the GMT website to find out more.

Computer Games:  Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection:  The best operational wargame this reviewer has played this year.  Failed Basic: Replay value is not what it could be.  Editor hobbled by lack of AI documentation.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  Napoleon in Italy Review

Gamesquad.com has published a review of Napoleon in Italy.  The reviewer (James Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Pros (+) Unexplored topic, fine details of units and leaders; impeccable AI; good strategic map and system.  Cons (-)  Weak tactical system; small font; simplistic icons.” You can read his review here.
