Computer Games:  Minsk ‘44 Updated

HPS Simulations have released an update for Panzer Campaigns Minsk ‘44.  It can be downloaded from the Panzer Campaigns update page at HPS.

Board games: New Games at Wargamedownloads.com

A couple of new historical board games (print and play) can now be downloaded from Wargamesdownloads.com

1) 1st Newbury. A game about the English Civil War battle.

2) Gliders from the Sky: the fall of Eben Emael.  A tactical-level WW2 game about the daring capture of the Eben Emael fortress in 1940.

Computer Games:  Wings of Power II: P40 Released

Shockwave have released Wings of Power II: P40 – their latest aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.  Visit the Shockwave website for more information. The P40 flew against the Axis powers in North Africa and Russia and against the Japs in Burma and the Pacific.

Computer Games:  AGEOD’s American Civil War Updated

AGEOD have released their latest update for American Civil War – The Blue and the Gray, bringing the Civil War grand strategy game up to version 1.07. It is available from the game’s official website.

Computer Games:  Forge of Freedom Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the American Civil War strategy title Forge of Freedom.  The reviewer (James Lombardi) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Complex and detailed war game with a great deal of customization. Fills a rare niche.  Failed Basic: Steep learning curve.”  You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  TOAW III Updated

Matrix Games have released an update for The Operational Art of War III.  The update includes 33 new or revised scenarios, new flanking rules, improved weather modelling and many other tweaks. It is available from the game’s official webpages at Matrix.

Military History:  Military Misdemeanours Book

Osprey Publishing has published a new hardback book entitled Military Misdemeanours which looks at more than 70 cases of military incompetence or mishap throughout history. It can be purchased from Amazon.

Computer Games:  TALACOSI Review

I’ve had an e-mail from the Historical Software Corporation to tell me that their WW2 platoon-level wargame TALACOSI (Tactical Land Combat Simulator) has been reviewed.  The reviewer (‘Junkyard Dog’) concluded his review by saying: “I recommend that wargamers or proponents of ‘serious games’ who like TacOps, the ATF franchise, PoA2 and similar games should definitely give TALACOSI a try.  Gamers who like real time, multiplayer action may also like to give this one a try.” The full review – with illustrations - can be downloaded as a pdf from the game’s official web site here.

Board Games: Monmouth Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the American War of Independence tactical-level board game Monmouth.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “Passed Inspection: Well rounded rule-set really gives feel for warfare during the American Revolution. Failed Basic: Counter management can be a little rough, as some stacks become very large.”  You can read his review here.  The game is published by GMT Games (website here).

Computer Games:  Napoleon in Italy Announced

Hussar Games – the designers of 1848 and For Liberty! - have announced that they are developing a Napoleonic hex-based strategy game called Napoleon in Italy.  It covers the young Napoleon’s campaigns against the Austrians in Northern Italy – and features both operational-level and tactical-level game play.  The game will be published by Matrix Games. Computer Games:  Combat Mission: Shock Force Review

The Wargamer has published a review of Battlefront’s Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF).  The reviewer (Jim Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “Any serious gamer should suffer through the not insignificant bugs - or wait for the patches - and get this game.” You can read his review here.

Board Games: Red Star Rising Released

Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) have released Red Star Rising – The War in Russia, 1941-1944.  This is an Eastern Front strategic-level game - with five scenarios - created by ‘East Front specialist’ Masahiro Yamazaki.  Visit the MMP web site to find out more.

Computer Games: MTW II: Kingdoms Review

IGN have published a review of Medieval Total War II: Kingdoms.  The reviewer (Steve Butts) wrote: “Kingdoms is definitely an expansion focused on adding lots more content than enlarging the game design and its appeal to you will depend on how satisfied you are with the basic format of the core game.” Click here to read the review and see 40+ screenshots. Podcasts:  Meeples and Miniatures Episode 19

Neil Shuck has released his 19th podcast (mp3 format). In this show he looks back at ‘The Other Partizan’ wargames show from 2nd September – where he interviewed several people from the industry.  In his usual board games review section he looks at the new expansions for BattleloreGoblin Marauders and Hundred Years War from Days of Wonder. On the miniature wargaming front he reviews the sci-fi skirmish rules 5150 by Two Hour Wargames. You can download his podcasts from here.

History Today: The Battle of Borodino

Napoleon fought against the Russians at the Battle of Borodino on this day in 1812.

Board Games: Strategy & Tactics Issue 245

Decision Games have released S&T #245 which features a Javier Romero game – The Triple Alliance War.  This is a strategic-level simulation of the second largest war ever fought in the Western Hemisphere – after the American Civil War.  Further details are available on the Strategy & Tactics magazine website.

Computer Games:  WW2 Grand Strategy Game Guide

The Armchair General website has published a guide to the five WWII grand strategy titles that have been released since April 2006:  Commander: Europe at War (Slitherine and Matrix Games), Gary Grigsby’s World at War: A World Divided (2 by 3 and Matrix Games), Hearts of Iron: Doomsday (Paradox), Making History:  The Calm and the Storm (Muzzy Lane and Strategy First) and Strategic Command 2 (Battlefront). Tuesday, 4th September

Computer Games:  Medieval II: Total War Updated

Sega have released an update for Medieval II: Total War - updating the game to version 1.3. Players need Update 2 installed in order to install Update 1.3.  This update is only for players using the original Medieval II: Total War.  Players who already have the Kingdoms expansion do not need it. Further information about the update – and a list of download locations – can be found on the official Total War site.

Board Games: Saratoga Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the American War of Independence tactical-level board game Saratoga.  The reviewer (Brandon Neff) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Saratoga is a solid game with beautiful components, simple rules and a challenging scenario. If, like me, you have never tried a game set in the American Revolution, this is a great way to introduce yourself to the tactics and strategies of that period.”  You can read his review here.  The game is published by GMT Games who can be found here.
