Podcasts:  Meeples and Miniatures Episode 31

Neil Shuck has released his 31st podcast (mp3 format). In this episode, he looks at Napoleonic miniatures gaming, as he reviews the Polemos Napoleonic rules written by Chris Rice and published by Baccus. Board Games: Field Commander - Rommel Released

Dan Verssen Games (DVG) has published Field Commander – Rommel.  It is the first title in a new Field Commander series of solitaire board games.  Players take command of Erwin Rommel’s forces during three WW2 campaigns: France 1940, North Africa 1941 and Normandy 1944. Computer Games:  Harpoon 3 - ANW Patched

Matrix Games and Advanced Gaming Systems have released an update for their simulation of modern naval warfare operations, Harpoon 3 - Advanced Naval WarfareThe comprehensive update makes some major changes to the Harpoon 3 game system and brings the title up to version 3.90.  It can be downloaded from the game’s webpages at Matrix.

Board Games: Nations at War: White Star Rising

Lock ’n Load Publishing (LnLP) has announced that Nations at War: White Star Rising is now available for pre-order. It is the first game to use Mark H. Walker’s Nations at War (NAW) game system.  NAW is based upon the World at War system and depicts platoon level combat during WW2. White Star Rising focuses upon fighting between American and German forces in France, Belgium and Germany in 1944-45. Visit the LnLP website to see some screenshots and find out more.

Computer Games:  Armored Brigade Beta Released

A games enthusiast in Finland has released the beta (test) version of a free wargame called Armored Brigade.  It is a 2d top down real-time game that covers tactical level combat during the Cold War (between 1965 and 1991). The main influences upon the game’s design are Steel Panthers, Armored Task Force and Combat Mission.  The designer - Juha Kellokoski - plans to expand the game to cover WW2 and modern times (post-2005).  Visit the game’s website to find out more.

Computer Games:  Campaign Jena-Auerstadt Updated

HPS Simulations have released an update for one of their Napoleonic titles - Campaign Jena-Auerstadt.  It can be downloaded from the Napoleonic Battles update page at HPS.

Board Games: Road to Berlin Review

Computer Games:  Commander: Europe at War Updated

Firepower Entertainment and Slitherine Games have released a patch for their WW2 hex-based strategy title Commander: Europe at War.  The version 1.06 update can be downloaded from the Slitherine website.

Matrix Games and Advanced Gaming Systems have released an update for their simulation of modern naval warfare operations, Larry Bond’s Harpoon – Commander’s Edition.  The large update is comprehensive and brings the game up to version 2008.024. Computer Games:  Mexican-American War Released

HPS Simulations have released The Age of Rifle and Musket: Mexican-American War.  It is a simulation of the battles and campaigns of the Mexican-American War (1846-47) and Texan War of Independence (1835-36).  The Mexican-American War features 14 unique maps and uses an updated version of John Tiller’s Early American Wars game engine. Computer Games:  Campaign Antietam Released

HPS Simulations have released the tenth game in their Civil War Battles series: Campaign Antietam.  There are some 199 stand alone scenarios and 164 campaign scenarios. The historical scenarios include 1st Bull Run, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Groveton (Brawner’s Farm), Chantilly, Cedar Mountain and South Mountain. Users can also create their own scenarios. Computer Games:  Gallic Wars Released

HPS Simulations have released the second title in their Ancient Warfare series of games: Gallic Wars.  It covers the campaigns of ancient Rome between 100 and 50BC.  The game’s main focus is upon Caesar’s conquest of Gaul, but it also covers the great slave rebellion led by Spartacus and the Mithradatic Wars in the East. Computer Games:  Carriers at War Updated

Matrix Games and Strategy Studies Group have released a mini update for their WW2 naval combat game Carriers at War.  It adds a few quick fixes to January’s major update and brings the version of the game up to 1.02.2.  Visit the Carriers at War webpages at Matrix to download the patch or find out more.

 

Tuesday, 4th March

Computer Games:  War Over Vietnam Updated

HPS Simulations have released a comprehensive update - which includes a new map - for Modern Air Power: War Over Vietnam.  It can be downloaded from the HPS website.

War Over Vietnam is a tactical air warfare simulation that features a detailed and accurate depiction of the operational air war over Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War between 1964 and 1972.

 

Monday, 3rd March

Computer Games:  Silent Hunter 4: U-Boat Missions Released

Silent Hunter 4: U-Boat Missions, the expansion for the Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific sub sim is now available. It enables players to prowl the Indian Ocean as the captain of a German submarine during the second half of WW2.  The add-on requires the original game.

Computer Games:  Advanced Tactics Review

Gamesquad has published a review of Advanced Tactics: World War II (ATWWII).  The reviewer (James Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Pros (+) Great AI; fine emphasis on logistics and command; easy interface; tremendous replay value.   Cons (-) Obtuse manual; bland graphics; boring turn interstice; repetitive clicks.”  You can read his review here.
