Computer Games:  Chickamauga and Vicksburg Updated

HPS Simulations have released updates for two of their Civil War Battles titles: Campaign Chickamauga and Campaign Vicksburg.  They can be downloaded from the American Civil War series updates page at HPS.

History Today: The Battle of Poltava

Today is the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava. Led by Czar Peter the Great, a Russian army of 49,000 defeated the 24,000-man Swedish army of King Charles XII near the town of Poltava in Ukraine. The battle was the most decisive victory of the Great Northern War (1700-21) and helped to make Russia a major European power.

Computer Games:  Theatre of War 2 Review

The Out of Eight game reviews blog has published a review of Battlefront’s WW2 tactical-level game Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943.  It gave it five out of eight. You can find the review here.

Computer Games:  Strike Fighters 2 Europe Updated

Thursday, 18th June

History Today: Waterloo

The Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon on this day in 1815 - bringing the Napoleonic Wars to an end.

Computer Games:  Horse and Musket: Volume 1 Released

Matrix Games and Boku Strategy Games have announced the release of Horse and Musket: Volume I, Frederick the Great.  It is a tactical-level game that covers many of the battles of Frederick the Great of Prussia - including Chotusitz, Hochkirch, Hohenfriedeberg, Kolin, Prague, Lobositz, Mollwitz, Leuthen, Torgau and Soor.  Visit the game’s webpages at Matrix to find out more.

Computer Games:  Theatre of War 2 Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Battlefront’s Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Loving attention to detail.  Living battle environments.  Wargamers have been waiting for this.  Failed Inspection: Replay value hurt by too few scenarios.”  You can read his review here.

Podcasts:  Meeples and Miniatures - Ambush Alley Interview

Neil Shuck has released a special edition of his Meeples & Miniatures podcast. In this show, he interviews Shawn Carpenter and David Phipps – two of the design team at Ambush Alley Games.  He looks at their gaming background, how they came to write the Ambush Alley Rules, their design process, other rulesets (Force on Force and Ambush Z) and future plans.  You can download Neil’s podcasts from here.

Matrix Games and Western Civilization Software have announced the release of the first update for their Napoleonic strategic/tactical game, Crown of Glory: Emperor’s Edition.  The comprehensive version 1.0.9 update comes with many improvements and bug fixes in addition to two new pieces of documentation: The Advanced Economy: Help and Advice for the New Player and the Modder’s Guide.  Get the update and further info about the game from the Emperor’s Edition webpages at Matrix.

On 6th June 1944 the Western Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of North-western Europe from Nazi tyranny.  Operation Overlord – as the landings were called – is well covered by the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Normandy 1944 website.

Computer Games:  Alexandrian Wars Released

Computer Games:  Dien Bien Phu Released

HPS Simulations have released the latest game in their Squad Battles series: Dien Bien Phu.  It is a squad level game that covers tactical combat during the Indochina War between 1946 and 1954. Computer Games:  War on the Southern Front Released

HPS Simulations and John Tiller have announced the release of War on the Southern Front: World War II in Europe.  It is the second instalment in a series of games called Total War in Europe and focuses upon WW2 in the Balkans, Crete, North Africa and Sicily.
