Computer Games:  Free Strategy Guide for Theatre of War

CDV Software Entertainment USA have released a free strategy guide for the WW2 tactical-level RTS game Theatre of War (ToW). The guide – which is in pdf format - can be downloaded from here.

Computer Games:  Armored Brigade Beta Updated

A games enthusiast in Finland has released an updated beta version (V430) of his free wargame.  Armored Brigade is a 2d top down real-time game that covers tactical level combat during the Cold War (between 1965 and 1991). The main influences upon the game’s design are Steel Panthers, Armored Task Force and Combat Mission.  The designer plans to expand the game to cover WW2 and modern times (post-2005).  Visit the game’s website to find out more.

History Today: Waterloo

The Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon on this day in 1815 - bringing the Napoleonic Wars to an end.

Computer Games:  EU III: In Nomine Review

The Out of Eight game reviews blog has published a review of Paradox Interactive’s new expansion for EU3 - Europa Universalis III: In Nomine. It gave it seven out of eight. You can find the review here (under June 12, 2008).

Board Games: Strategy & Tactics Issue 250

Decision Games have released S&T #250 which features a Bruce Costello designed game – Red Dragon Rising: The Coming War With China.  The game simulates a hypothetical war between the People’s Republic of China and a US-led coalition between now and the end of 2014. Further details are available on the Strategy & Tactics magazine website.

Computer Games:  Mexican-American War Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of The Age of Rifle and Musket: Mexican-American War. The reviewer (Jim Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Great accuracy, wide range of scenarios and campaigns, fine terrain graphics.  Failed basic: Poor building graphics, indifferent AI.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  Harpoon 3 - ANW Updated

Matrix Games and Advanced Gaming Systems have released another patch for their venerable simulation of modern naval warfare operations, Harpoon 3 - Advanced Naval Warfare.  The version 3.9.3 update fixes around a dozen crashes or bugs posted on the community issue tracking system. It can be downloaded from the Harpoon 3 webpages at Matrix.

History Today: D-Day

On 6th June 1944 the Western Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of northwestern Europe from Nazi tyranny. Operation Overlord – as the landings were called – is well covered by the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Normandy 1944 website.

Neil Shuck has released his 34th podcast (mp3 format). In this episode, he talks about the games and new releases he saw at two of the UK’s recent gaming exhibitions - Partizan and UK Games Expo.  You can download his podcasts from here.

Podcasts:  Point2Point Episode 34

The Point 2 Point board gaming podcast site has been updated with another episode. In Point2Point episode 34 the presenters - Jason and Scott - answer feedback and discuss the issues it raises, including the definition of a monster game and the difference between point to point maps and area maps.
