Computer Games: PT Boats Development News
Akella have announced that their upcoming naval game, PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, will take advantage of Directx 10.
PT Boats is a naval simulator that places gamers in charge of an Allied, Russian or German torpedo boat or ‘mosquito’ fleet during WW2. It is due to be released in the fourth quarter of this year. Visit the game’s official website for more info, screenshots and movies.
Board Games: Strategy & Tactics Issue 244
Decision Games have released S&T #244 which features a two map, two countersheet, mini monster of a game called Drive on Moscow: Road to Ruin 2, Operation Typhoon. Further details are available on the Strategy & Tactics magazine website.

Matrix Games have announced that they are publishing VT Design’s Advanced Tactics – which is the successor to the free strategy game People’s Tactics. Advanced Tactics is a versatile turn-based operational level game system that gives gamers the chance to wage almost any battle in any time period. Computer Games: Theatre of War Add-on and Patch
Battlefront has released a Battle for Moscow add-on and game patch for Theatre of War (ToW). This add-on/patch not only adds a free 10 Mission Russian Campaign to the game, but also a full Map Editor as well as many game fixes, additions and optimizations. Computer Games: Battle of Britain II Updated
Shockwave Productions have released a small update for their WW2 air combat strategy and simulation game, Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory, updating it to version 2.06.1. Neil Shuck has released his 13th podcast (mp3 format). In this show he talks about his recent visits to two gaming events: Partizan ’07 and UK Games Expo. Partizan is a miniatures gaming show whereas UK Games Expo is more of a U.S. style gaming convention. Computer Games: AGEOD’s American Civil War Review
The Wargamer has published a review of AGEOD’s American Civil War - The Blue and the Gray. The reviewer (Will Trotter) concluded: “To sum up my reactions: this game creates the same habit-forming gestalt as that which emerges from the best Civil War literature. It offers enormous replay value as well as compelling turn-after-turn depth, and its designers have consistently approached their subject with understanding, even love. I say: three loud huzzahs for the lads from Meylan (i.e. AGEOD), France!” You can read the review here.

Computer Games: 1914 Shells of Fury Announced
Strategy First have announced that they are publishing h2f’s 1914 Shells of Fury. It will be the first WW1 submarine simulation on the market. Players take command of one of the Kaiser’s U-boats during the Great War.
Game features include:
* Detailed models of submarines, warships, merchant ships and aircraft * Four different German submarine boats to choose from: the Armada-Petrolboat, Armada-Dieselboat, UB-I and UC-II * Over 50 individual missions with accurate historical background * Campaign-mode from 1914 to 1918 * Mission-generator * Adjustable levels of difficulty * Realistic Submarine Stations

Computer Games: Napeoleon’s Campaigns Announced
Nobilis have announced that they are publishing a turn-based strategy game called Napoleon’s Campaigns. It is being designed for them by Philippe Thibaut of AGEOD – who was the creator of Europa Universalis I and II, Pax Romana, Great invasions, Birth of America and AGEOD’s American Civil War. Napoleon’s Campaigns is due to be released in Q4 2007.

Board Games: Battle-Market Issue 2 Released
Battle-Market have released the second issue of their quarterly board game magazine. This issue (Summer 2007) includes three new games: Ma'alinti Rangers: Black Hawks Down, Tannenberg 1410: Downfall of the Teutonic Order and Tannenberg 1914: Rail Mobile. The Battle-Market website can be found here. The first issue (Spring 2007) was released on the 21st March.
Computer Games: Armored Brigade Announced
A games enthusiast in Finland has recently announced his intention to produce a free game called Armored Brigade. It is a real-time tactical level game which will cover two periods: WW2 and the Cold War (1965-91). The game’s website can be found here. The screenshots on the game’s site are of an early version of the game. The developer hopes to get an artist to improve the graphics in the final version - which is due to be released early next year.

Computer Games: Hearts of Iron Anthology Announced
Paradox has announced that all instalments of the Hearts of Iron (HoI) franchise (Hearts of Iron, Hearts of Iron II, Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday and Hearts of Iron II DD Armageddon) will be made available in a complete collection called Hearts of Iron Anthology. It will be released in late August.

Board Games: Cowboys: The Way of the Gun Released
Worthington Games have announced the release of their Wild West game: Cowboys: The Way of the Gun. The game features stand-up cowboy counters with plastic bases. The box, boards, and all components feature full-colour artwork by Gary S. Zaboly. There are 26 historical and Hollywood-style scenarios which depict gun fights, bank robberies, lynch mobs, cattle rustling, jail breaks and many other Western actions. Six double-sided geomorphic map boards are used to create the look of the Old West. Visit the Worthington website for more information and images.
Board Games: Shifting Sands Review
The Armchair General website has published a review of MMP’s card driven WW2 game Shifting Sands: The Campaign in North Africa 1940–1943. The reviewer (Robert Delwood) wrote: “Not just another North Africa war game, Shifting Sands expands the game’s scope beyond its title to include the little understood Abyssinian, Iraq, and Palestine campaigns. Two scenarios cover the action from the full campaign through to Operation Torch (the American landings), and Operation Sonnenblume (Sunflower). Both are intended to be played in an evening.” You can read the review here.

The Wargames Journal has announced that they have ceased to produce their print magazine. They have decided to return to their roots and revert to publishing a downloadable online magazine (pdf format) - which will be free of charge. The Wargames Journal website can be found here.

The second issue of Wargames Painting & Modelling (WP&M) magazine has been released. WP&M is a free online magazine (pdf format) about painting miniatures and modelling for wargamers. It is produced by Dave Robotham – sometimes known as ‘Court Jester.’ The magazine can be downloaded or viewed here.

Computer Games: Warship Combat: Dreadnoughts and Battleships Updated
Naval Warfare Simulations (NWS) have released an update for their 1890-1950 naval wargame Warship Combat: Dreadnoughts and Battleships (WCDB). The 7.07 MB update beings the game up to version 1.40. NWS have also released an updated version of their demo for the game. The update, demo and further information about WCDB can be found on the game’s official page at NWS.

Computer Games: Medieval Total War II Expansion Trailer
Sega have released another trailer to show off their first expansion to Medieval Total War II: Medieval Total War Kingdoms. This expansion will feature 13 new playable factions, new hero characters, over 150 new units and four new campaigns: Britannia, the Teutonic knights, the Crusade to the Holy Land and the conquest of the New World.
Computer Games: New Space Strategy Game Released
Pollux Gamelabs have released a new space strategy game called Lost Empire. It is being digitally distributed by publisher Paradox Interactive on the digital distribution network Gamer’s Gate.
Lost Empire is a turn-based space strategy game set in the 47th century featuring a story line about the struggle for survival of seven galactic civilizations and their battle with a mad goddess. The game features a new approach to storytelling for the 4X genre, different gameplay for each of the seven playable races, real-time 3D rendered battle sequences, a galaxy of up to 5,000 solar systems for players to explore, and a huge multi-linear and multilevel tech tree. Computer Games: Campaign Jena-Auerstaedt Review
The Armchair General website has published a review of HPS’s Napoleonic Battles Campaign Jena-Auerstaedt. The reviewer (Mark Tomlin) concluded that: “Jena-Auerstadt is a campaign that is rarely, if ever, covered, especially in computer wargaming and this alone makes it worth acquiring.” You can read the review here. Computer Games: Battlefront Review
The Wargamer has published a review of SSG’s Battlefront. The reviewer (Ken Trace) wrote: “Battlefront is wargaming in its purest form. It offers great historical accuracy and playability, which combine to produce an exceptional combat experience. It can be as simple or complex as the player wishes, making it an ideal choice for grog and novice alike.” You can read it here.
Battlefront is a turn-based wargame that depicts battalion level combat in four very different theatres of WW2: Gazala in North Africa, Market Garden in Western Europe, Novorossisk in Russia and Saipan in the Pacific. You can find out more about the game on its official web pages at Matrix.

Miniatures: New Gladiators Game Released
eM4 Miniatures have announced that following the sell-out success of Ludus Gladiatorius (LG) they have released a follow-up game: Ludus Gladiatorius 2 (LG2). It is another complete gladiator combat game - which comes with five ready-painted 28mm miniatures. LG2 has new gladiator types: the retiarius, bestiarius, criminal, Amazon and lion. They are compatible with the gladiators from the original game. The game system is basically the same as before with some new additions. The dice have been colour-coded and there is a campaign system so that gladiators can develop from game to game (if they survive!). Computer Games: Making History: The Calm and the Storm Demo
Strategy First have released an updated demo for their WW2 grand strategy game, Making History: The Calm and The Storm, bringing it into line with the latest version of the game (v2.0.1). The 277 MB demo features a tutorial and a 20 turn historic scenario. It can be downloaded from the Downloads page of the game’s official website.
Military History: US Airborne Units in the Pacific Book
Osprey Publishing have started to ship their new title US Airborne Units in the Pacific Theater 1942–45 (Battle Orders 26). It examines the wide variety of U.S. airborne units that served in the Pacific Theatre during WW2. Among the units covered are the 11th Airborne Division; the elite 1st Special Service Force; the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate); and the 1st Marine Parachute Regiment. The book can be purchased from Amazon.

Computer Games: Combat Mission: Shock Force Screenshots
Battlefront have updated their blog with 22 screenshots of Syrian vehicles from their upcoming wargame Combat Mission: Shock Force. You can find the blog here.
The game is a tactical-level military simulation that depicts a hypothetical near-future conflict in Syria. It’s not just an evolutionary advance from the earlier Combat Mission games, but a revolutionary jump. The game’s official web page is here. It is due to be released in July.
Computer Games: First Eagles Additional Aircraft Released
A group of modders (the SFP1 Dev A-Team) have created another additional flyable aircraft for my favourite WW1 air combat game: Thirdwire’s First Eagles: The Great War 1918. It is the late war German Siemens Shuckert D.III. It can be downloaded from the Downloads section of the CombatACE website (it is listed under Thirdwire Series > Add-On Aircraft > WW1 Aircraft). You will need to be registered with CombatACE to download the files. There are many other additional planes, skins, missions and other mods available on the site.
First Eagles can be purchased from Amazon in the UK.

Miniatures: Mahdist Wars Source Book Released
After a year in development the Mahdist Wars Source Book (MWSB) has been printed and made available. The two volume work has been released in the hope that it’ll become the standard wargamer’s reference for colonial wars in the Sudan and Abyssinia. Articles on uniforms, organization, tactics of the Ansar, British, Egyptians, Italians, and Abyssinians, including detailed battle studies, make up the majority of the 270-odd pages of both Volumes. There are also 17 pages of uniform plates and colour photos never before seen in print. The MWSB can be ordered from The Virtual Armchair General (TVAG) website.

Computer Games: Mediterranean Air War Released
Mediterranean Air War (MAW) has been released on the anniversary of Italy’s declaration of war on Britain and France in 1940.
MAW is a free standalone campaign and theatre of operations mod for the Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3.1 engine. It features new aircraft with new flight dynamics modelling, new damage modelling, new scenery, new buildings, new weather conditions, new visual effects, new sound effects and new ground units. Podcasts: Machiavelli’s ‘The Prince’
The Military History Podcast blog has been updated with an interesting podcast about Machiavelli’s famous book: The Prince (Il Principe). Niccolò Machiavelli was a political and military philosopher who lived in Florence during the Renaissance. His most famous work – The Prince – offered tips to political leaders at the time about how to conquer and rule territory. The book brought the word "Machiavellian" into wide usage as a pejorative term. It’s an interesting read for people who enjoy strategy games. You can find the podcast here.

Military History: Chinese Civil War Article
The Armchair General website has published an article about the Huaihai campaign during the Chinese Civil War. It was the first campaign in which the communist forces of the Peoples Liberation Army were able to defeat the Nationalist Army in open conventional warfare. You can read it here.

History Today: The Sinking of the Szent Istvan
The Austro-Hungarian dreadnought,SMS Szent Istvan, was sunk by an Italian torpedo on this day in 1918 during WW1. It was on patrol in the Adriatic with another Austro-Hungarian battleship when both ships were surprised by a couple of Italian torpedo boats. The Szent Istvan was hit by two torpedoes – one of which exploded. It is one of only three battleships whose sinking was filmed – together with HMS Barham and the USS Arizona. The video is below. The torpedo boats managed to escape undamaged because of their speed and small size.

Computer Games: Great Invasions at AGEOD
The official website for Great Invasions: The Dark Ages, 350-1066 AD is now hosted by AGEOD. You can find it here. The official forum for the game has also moved to a new section of the AGEOD forum.
Philippe Thibaut’s Great Invasions is a turn-based grand strategy game set in Europe during the Dark Ages. It’s a complex game, with over 80 playable nations, 22 different ethnic groups and numerous religious, political, economic and territorial entities.
Computer Games: Silent Hunter 4 Review
The Wargamer has published a review of Ubisoft’s sub sim, Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific. The reviewer (Oleg Mastruko) wrote: “After a couple of patches this well designed game has become the finest submarine simulation ever released, enjoyable for players of varying levels of experience with simulations and naval games.” Click here to read the review and see some screenshots. Computer Games: Europa Universalis III Updated
Paradox Interactive have released an update for their popular grand strategy game Europa Universalis III (EU III). It takes the game up to version 1.3.
The update includes:
* Revised peace logics for improved gameplay * The ability to replace drop out players with the AI in multiplayer * An improved AI, for even more challenging gameplay * An expanded historical database, with tons of detail added to the game * An improved interface, with numerous tool tips to explain various actions in detail * Dozens of other gameplay tweaks
The update can be accessed through the EU III launcher.
The expansion pack for EU III - Napoleon’s Ambition - is expected to be released at the end of August.
Computer games: Great Battles of Rome Released
Slitherine have announced the release of The History Channel Great Battles of Rome for the PC. It is a role-playing and real-time strategy game blended with top quality TV footage from the History Channel. The game starts with the formation of Rome and charts Roman history up to the time of Augustus Caesar.
Game features include:

Computer games: Carriers at War Released
Matrix Games and Strategic Studies Group have announced that Carriers at War has put to sea!
Carriers at War (CAW) is a WW2 naval combat and strategy game set in the Pacific Theatre. It Focuses heavily on carrier fleet command strategy. There are seven basic scenarios for the game (with several variants for each): Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Coral Sea, Midway, East Solomons, Santa Cruz and Philippine Sea. Computer Games: Histwar: Les Grognards Interview
The Armchair General website has published an interview with the lead developer (Jean-Michel Mathe) of Histwar: Les Grognards (HW:LG) - Battlefront’s upcoming Napoleonic game - which has recently gone into beta testing. HW:LG is a FPC (first person commander) simulation and tactical level wargame. It will come with ten scenarios depicting famous Napoleonic battles such as Austerlitz and Borodino. History Today: D-Day
On 6th June 1944 the Western Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of northwestern Europe from Nazi tyranny. Operation Overlord – as the invasion was called – is well covered by the Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Normandy 1944 website.

Computer Games: John Tiller’s Campaign Series Released
Matrix Games and Campaign Series Legion have released their compilation of strategy classics, John Tiller’s Campaign Series. This compilation combines the WW2 turn-based tactical level games from Talonsoft’s Campaign Series (West Front, East Front, East Front 2 and Rising Sun) with all of the official add-ons and expansion packs in one package. History Today: The Battle of Midway
The pivotal naval battle in the Pacific Theatre of WW2 – the Battle of Midway - started on this day in 1942. The battle was a crushing defeat for the Japanese and helped to turn the tide of the war. Computer Games: Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided Review
The Wargamer has published a review of Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided. The game is a turn-based strategy game with area movement which depicts WW2 on a global scale. The reviewer (Al Berke) concluded that: “Gary Grigsby's World at War: A World Divided is an excellent game that provides a realistic simulation of World War II at the strategic and operational level. Computer Games: Campaign Chickamauga Released
HPS Simulations have released the ninth game in their Civil War Battles series: Campaign Chickamauga. The game covers the entire Chickamauga campaign in Kentucky, Tennessee and northern Georgia from 1862-63. There are some 170 stand alone scenarios and 80 campaign scenarios. The scenarios include the battles at Perryville, Stones River, Frankfort, Nashville, Chickamauga, Greater Mill Springs and Chattanooga. Gamers can also create their own scenarios. Computer Games: Squad Battles: Soviet-Afghan War Released
HPS Simulations have released their new Squad Battles title - Soviet-Afghan War (SAW) - which is set in Afghanistan during the nine-year Soviet occupation of the country. The game is a tactical level simulation of the conflict and features some 57 standalone scenarios and three campaigns. Its 39 different maps - ranging in size from 1900 hexes to 59,000 hexes - will provide ample ground for scenario designers to create their own actions.
