Computer Games: DOSBox Updated
DOSBox - the popular DOS emulator that allows gamers to play old DOS-based games (such as Age of Rifles) on newer operating systems - has been updated to version 0.71. DOSBox is OpenSource and completely free to use. For more information or to download the update visit the official DOSBox site.

Computer Games: AGEOD’s American Civil War Reviewed
The Armchair General website has published a review – with screenshots - of AGEOD’s American Civil War - The Blue and the Gray. The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summarized his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: The sweep, pageantry and magnitude of the American Civil War in one game. Failed Basic: PBEM implementation is clumsy. Turn processing takes a very long time. Organization of units can be confusing.” You can read the review here.
Computer Games: For Liberty! Updated
Matrix Games and Hussar Games have released another update for their strategy title For Liberty! The latest update adds a new feature - a ‘Retreat all units’ button - and fixes a serious issue with tactical battles that appeared in the 1.80 update.
For Liberty! is a turn-based strategy game – with tactical battles – which covers the American War of Independence (1775 – 1783) and the Hungarian Rakoczi Independence War (1703 to 1711). To find out more about the game – and see some screenshots - visit its official web pages at Matrix.
Computer Games: Combat Mission: Shock Force Released
Battlefront have announced the release of Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF). CMSF is a tactical-level military simulation that depicts a hypothetical near-future conflict in Syria. Board Games: Talavera Released
Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) has released the fourth game in their Napoleonic Battles Series: Talavera. As an added bonus it comes with a free mini-game which covers the small but decisive battle of Vimeiro. Visit the MMP website for more information.
Podcasts: Meeples and Miniatures Episode 16
Neil Shuck has released his 16th podcast (mp3 format). In this show he talks about his visit to Manorcon - where he played the board games Colosseum and Fire & Fury: A Viking Saga for the first time. He also reviews the sci-fi miniatures rules Combat Zone - and looks at the figures available for the game. You can download his podcasts from here.
Computer Games: PT Boats Website
Akella have launched a new website to showcase their upcoming naval game, PT Boats: Knights of the Sea. It can be found here. PT Boats is a naval simulator that places gamers in charge of an Allied, Russian or German torpedo boat or ‘mosquito’ fleet during WW2. It is due to be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

Computer Games: Combat Mission: Shock Force Review
Quarter to Three have published a review of Battlefront’s Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF). The reviewer wrote: “Here’s one for the game of the year list: Combat Mission: Shock Force is, at this point, a shoo-in for Most Disappointing Game of 2007. Battlefront’s presentation of modern combat is a serious letdown, partly for its design, but largely for the state of its release.” You can read the review here.

Computer Games: Commander – Europe at War Patched
Slitherine have announced that their WW2 grand strategy title Commander – Europe at War has been updated to version 1.02. The patch fixes bugs, adds new features, adjusts game balance and tweaks the AI. Please note that you must download your patch from the publisher you purchased it from. You can get it from Matrix Games (website here) or Slitherine (site here).

Podcasts: Meeples and Miniatures Episode 15
Neil Shuck has released his 15th podcast (mp3 format). This show has a Roman theme – or more accurately a Roman Arena theme. He reviews the board game Ave Caesar, which is about chariot racing and the miniatures game Red Sand, Blue Sky, which is about gladiators. He also looks at the figures available for gladiator games. History Today: The Battle of Passchendaele
The Queen has attended a commemoration service to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. It was held at Tyne Cot cemetery near the Belgian town of Ypres – which is the largest Commonwealth military burial site in the world. It is a couple of miles from the village of Passchendaele - which gave its name to one of the most horrific battles of WWI.

Ubisoft have released a patch for their WW2 sub sim Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific, which updates the game to version 1.3. The patch download mirrors can be found on the game’s official website.

Computer Games: Great Invasions Review
The Armchair General website has published a review of Philippe Thibaut’s Great Invasions:The Dark Ages, 350-1066 AD. The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) concluded: “When the day is done, and the barbarians return to their lodges, to sharpen their axes and await the next day’s sacking, GI is a hard game to recommend for most gamers. History buffs interested in the period, and hard core strategy gamers will no doubt find something to like in Invasions. For most gamers however, the game as is, is probably best left unpillaged.” You can read the review here.
Great Invasions is a turn-based grand strategy game set in Europe during the Dark Ages. It’s a complex game, with over 80 playable nations, 22 different ethnic groups and numerous religious, political, economic and territorial entities. The game’s official website is hosted by AGEOD. The Wargamer has published a review of the WW2 grand strategy game Making History: The Calm and the Storm. The reviewer (Jim Cobb) concluded: “Making History: The Calm and the Storm’s counterfactual approach to World War II certainly allows gamers and students to try out the myriad of ‘what ifs’ available during this period. As such, the game fulfills its academic purpose well. However, hardcore wargamers will be disappointed with the simple combat model and country builders may find the flaws in the geographic, economic and diplomatic system disturbing.” You can read the review here. Computer Games: Harpoon 3 Review
Gamesquad have published a review of the modern naval warfare simulation Harpoon 3 – Advanced Naval Combat. The reviewer (Scott Tortorice) concluded: “In short, H3:ANW is the virtual equivalent of four years at Annapolis [Naval Academy]. If that sounds like fun to you, then, by all means, have at it. Computer Games: Carriers at War Review
The Wargamer has published a review of Carriers at War (CAW). You can read it here.
CAW is a WW2 naval combat and strategy game set in the Pacific Theatre which focuses heavily on carrier fleet command. There are seven basic scenarios for the game (with several variants for each): Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Coral Sea, Midway, East Solomons, Santa Cruz and Philippine Sea. History Today: Gettysburg
The third and last day of the Battle of Gettysburg was fought on this day in 1863. The most famous incident of the day’s fighting was ‘Pickett’s charge’ – when the Confederate attack on Cemetery Ridge was repulsed with heavy losses.
