Podcasts:  Meeples and Miniatures Episode 28

Neil Shuck has released his 28th podcast (mp3 format). In this show he looks at skirmish wargaming with large scale miniatures – 40mm to be exact – and specifically skirmish wargames set during the late 18th and early 19th Century (the French & Indian War, American War of Independence and Napoleonic Wars).  You can download his podcasts from here.

Board Games: West Front Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of West Front (2nd edition).  The board game – which uses 130 wooden counters - simulates the campaigns in Western Europe between 1943 and 1945, specifically the invasion of Sicily, the battle of Cassino, the invasion of France and the race for Berlin. Computer Games:  Carriers at War Updated

Matrix Games and Strategy Studies Group have released an update for their WW2 naval combat game Carriers at War.  The update is comprehensive and brings the version of the game up to 1.02.  It includes a new scenario called Tarawa, an improved scenario editor and various game play improvements and scenario tweaks. Computer Games:  Napoleon’s Campaigns Patched

AGEOD have released their second update for Napoleon’s Campaigns, bringing the Napoleonic strategy game up to version 1.03. The update tweaks and improves the victory conditions for the game’s scenarios and adds two new campaigns.  It is available from the game’s official website.

Board Games: Web-Grognards’ Game Review Links

Computer Games:  Montjoie! Released

AGEOD have released Montjoie! the video game.  It is the computer game version of the board game Montjoie!  Players take on the role of one of the factions (England, France, Burgundy, Brittany, Flanders and Navarre) that vied for control of France during the Hundred Year’s War (1337-1454).  Visit the game’s website to find out more.

Computer Games:  Battleground Civil War Updated

Matrix Games have released a small patch for their American Civil War title John Tiller’s Battleground Civil War.  It fixes an issue where a few Antietam and Bull Run scenarios were not showing up in the scenario selection window.  Visit the game’s webpages at Matrix to download the patch or find our more.

Computer Games:  Napoleon’s Ambition Updated

Paradox Interactive have released an update for their Napoleonic expansion for Europa Universalis IIINapoleon’s Ambition.  The version 2.2 update can be downloaded and installed using the eu3 launcher application in the game’s installation folder. History Today: Rorke’s Drift

The two-day Battle of Rorke’s Drift started on this day in 1879. Fewer than 140 British troops beat off a Zulu army of 4-5,000 warriors sent to destroy them at the Rorke’s Drift mission station. The successful defence of the outpost is held as one of history’s finest defence actions.

Monday, 21st January

History Today: Isandlwana

The Battle of Isandlwana was fought on this day in 1879. More than 22,000 Zulu warriors surprised and overwhelmed 1,400 British troops and 2,500 African auxiliaries in British service.

Computer Games:  Napoleon in Italy Updated

Matrix Games and Hussar Games have announced that they have released an update for Napoleon in Italy.  The v1.05 update includes a number of balance changes to the Piedmont armies and campaign, fixes an AI general issue and tweaks the balance for readiness and cohesion regeneration.  It also includes a new expanded campaign historical background guide. The update can be downloaded from the Napoleon in Italy webpages at Matrix.

Board Games: Strange Defeat Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Strange Defeat – a board game which covers the fall of France to the German blitzkrieg in 1940. Board Games: Death of the 1st Panzer Released

Lock n’ Load Publishing has released World at War: Death of the 1st Panzer.  It is an expansion pack for World at War: Eisenbach Gap which adds German panzer units – Leopard tanks, Marder infantry fighting vehicles and tank destroyers – to the original Cold War game.  Visit the Lock n’ Load website for further information.

Computer Games:  Advanced Tactics Updated

Matrix Games and VR Designs have released another update for their WW2 turn-based strategy game, Advanced Tactics: World War II (ATWWII). The version 1.10L update includes scores of changes, new scenarios and improvements.  Visit the ATWWII webpages at Matrix to get the update or find out more.

Miniatures:  Wargames Painting and Modelling

The third issue of Wargames Painting and Modelling (WP&M) is now available.  WP&M is a free on-line magazine (pdf format) which looks at painting miniatures and modelling for wargamers. It can be downloaded or viewed at the magazine’s new website.

Computer Games:  Broken Crescent Released

The Broken Crescent mod for Medieval 2: Total War has been released.  It covers the wars of the medieval Middle East from the time of the Crusades:  starting with Saladin in 1174 and ending in 1408.  Broken Crescent features 17 new factions (including 9 Islamic factions), over 300 new units, a new campaign map (spanning from Anatolia to India), innovative battle and campaign dynamics and a brand new soundtrack.  It can be downloaded from the links in this forum thread at the Total War Center.

Board Games: Totensonntag Released

Lock n’ Load Publishing has released Corps Command: Totensonntag.  It is the first offering in their new Corps Command series. Totensonntag covers the First Battle of Sidi Rezegh (Libya, 1941), in which gamers control battalions and regiments using the game's unique impulse activation system. Designed by Peter Bogdasarian, Corps Command: Totensonntag is an introduction to a new operational-level gaming system.  Future modules are planned for Operation Goodwood, Prochorovka and Kasserine Pass.  Visit the Lock n’ Load website for further information.

Board Games: ZunTzu Updated

ZunTzu has been updated to version 1.2.  It is an online gaming platform and audio-conferencing tool that allows players to enjoy board games live over the internet. To find out more about it – or download the program – visit the ZunTzu website.

Board Games: The Kaiser’s Pirates Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of The Kaiser’s Pirates.  The game is a card game in which players – or an individual solitaire player - assume the role of a German commerce raider or Allied merchant ship captain at the start of WW1. You can read the review here.
