Computer Games:  Grumman F6F Hellcat Released

RealFlight Simulations have released Grumman F6F Hellcat - a WW2 flight sim add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. More details are available on the games webpage at RealFlight.

Board Games: Strategy & Tactics Issue 254

Decision Games have released Strategy & Tactics #254 featuring the game Hannibal’s War which covers the Second Punic War between ancient Rome and Carthage.  Further details are available on the Strategy & Tactics magazine website.

Computer Games:  Squad Battles: Spanish Civil War Review

Gamesquad has published a review of Squad Battles: Spanish Civil War.  The reviewer (Jim Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Pros (+) Fascinating subject; many scenarios, historically accurate; fine replay value. Computer Games:  Strike Fighters 2 Released

Third Wire Productions have released Strike Fighters 2 - an updated version of their best selling jet air combat game Strike Fighters. Player flyable aircraft include some of the most legendary fighters from the early jet age, including the F-100D Super Sabre, A-4 Skyhawk and F-4 Phantom II. Board Games: Wings of War Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the Wings of War series of WW1 air combat card games.  The reviewers (Paul Glasser and Gerald D. Swick) summed up their thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Easy to learn and play; pre-planned movements create intense play throughout the game. Failed Basic: Some important rules are buried inside paragraphs.”  You can read the review here

Computer Games:  Steel Panthers WW2 Updated

Shrapnel Games have released another upgrade for their excellent – and free – WW2 tactical-level wargame winSPWW2.  The upgrade includes various tweaks and improvements, nine new scenarios and improved OOBs.  Download the version 3.5 update - or the whole game - from the winSPWW2 webpage at Shrapnel.  Find out more about winSPWW2 at this fansite.

Computer Games:  War Plan Pacific Review

IGN.com has published a review of the WW2 Pacific Theatre grand strategy title War Plan Pacific. The reviewer (Steve Butts) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “War Plan Pacific nicely straddles the sometimes contradictory concepts of realism and accessibility. With a simple interface and gameplay that's focused more on basic essentials, the game proves that you don't need reams and reams of technical data in order to be successful.”  You can find the review here.

Computer Games:  Jutland Released

Storm Eagle Studios have announced that Jutland – their long-awaited sequel to Distant Guns – is now available for download and purchase. Jutland is a 3D naval wargame that covers the North Sea actions between Britain and Germany during WW1. It features 900+ historically accurate, highly detailed 3D ship models and some of the most realistic True Physics Ballistics ever released in a wargame. Computer Games:  Black Shark Released

The Eagle Dynamics development studio and The Fighter Collection have released Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark.  The game is a combat flight simulator centred upon the Russian Ka-50 attack helicopter.  DCS: Black Shark is the flagship title of a new DCS series of games which will feature other aircraft – both fixed wing and helicopter.  Visit the Digital Combat Simulator website to find out more.

Board Games: Deep into the Bekaa Released

Board Games: Conflict of Heroes Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the WW2 tactical-level board game Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! Russia 1941-42.  The reviewer (Bill Boden) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “Passed Inspection: A solid game design that plays smoothly.  Failed Basic: A bit pricey for an introductory-level wargame.”  You can read his review here.  The game is published by Academy Games who can be found here.

 

Monday, 8th December

Computer Games:  Kharkov 1942 Released

Lighthouse Interactive and developer Discus games have announced that Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942 is now available in shops in the UK.  It is also available for download internationally. The game is a 3D tank combat simulator that covers armoured warfare on the Eastern Front in 1942.  Visit the Lighthouse Interactive website to find out more.

Board Games: Spanish Eagles Released

Compass Games have released Spanish Eagles.  The tactical-level game covers the battles of Albuera and Talavera during the Peninsular War. More details are available on the Compass Games website.

Miniatures:  Field of Glory Review

The Wargamer has published a review of Field of Glory - the miniatures rules for ‘Ancients’ published by Osprey Publishing and Slitherine.  The reviewer awarded the rules set a “skosh over 9” out of 10.  You can read his review here

The Armchair General website has published a review of the American War of Independence tactical-level board game The Battle of Monmouth.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection:  Miniature-like game play.  Deep historical content.  Failed Basic: Requires precise counter placement; players with clumsy fingers, cats and jumping dogs will be challenged.” You can read his review here.  The game is published by Clash of Arms who can be found here.

Computer Games:  Commander - Napoleon at War Updated

Matrix Games and Slitherine Strategies have released a major update for their Napoleonic grand strategy title Commander - Napoleon at War.  The comprehensive update brings the game to version 1.06 and comes with a variety of changes including some balance tweaks on unit pricing and the economic strength of some countries.
