Computer Games:  Hearts of Iron Anthology Released

Paradox Interactive have released their WW2 grand strategy game bundle, Hearts of Iron Anthology.  This complete collection includes Hearts of Iron, Hearts of Iron II, Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday and the new booster pack Armageddon.  Further information about the Hearts of Iron series of games can be found on the Paradox website.

Computer Games:  Combat Mission: Shock Force Patched

A new patch is now available for Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF), updating the Battlefront, Paradox and Gamersgate editions of the game to version 1.03.  Players must download the version of the patch that is compatible with their edition.  It can be downloaded from the CMSF downloads page at Battlefront.

Computer Games:  Guns of August Updated

Matrix Games and Adanac Command Studies have announced that a new update is now available for their WW1 grand strategy game, Guns of August 1914-1918.  It can be downloaded from the game’s official webpages at Matrix.

Computer Games:  Carriers at War Updated

Matrix Games and Strategic Studies Group have released an update for their Pacific War naval title Carriers at War.  It can be obtained from the game’s official webpages at Matrix.

Podcasts:  Meeples and Miniatures Episode 18

Neil Shuck has released his 18th podcast (mp3 format). In this show he interviews Peter Berry of Baccus Miniatures.  They chat about Baccus and their various rules and figure ranges, including Polymos and Command Horizons.  You can download the podcasts from here.

Computer Games:  1914 Shells of Fury Released

Strategy First have announced that they have released 1914 Shells of Fury.  It is the first WW1 submarine simulation on the market.  Players take command of one of the Kaiser’s U-boats during the Great War.  Visit the game’s official webpage for screenshots and further information.

Computer Games:  Guns of August Review

GameSquad have published a review of the WW1 grand strategy title Guns of August 1914-1918.  The reviewer (Jim Cobb) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Pros (+) Good historical approach; simple strategic resource system; innovative combat system; great replayability.  Cons (-) Clumsy scrolling; some confusion shuffling and selecting units; ill-organized and incomplete manual.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  EU3: Napoleon’s Ambition Released

Paradox Interactive have announced that their much anticipated expansion pack to Europa Universalis III has been released exclusively on GamersGate (website here). The expansion called Napoleon's Ambition covers the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

Computer Games:  Empire: Total War Announced

SEGA have today announced that The Creative Assembly are working on a brand new Total War series game called Empire: Total War.  It will feature a turned-based campaign game and 3D real-time battles – including, for the first time, 3D naval battles. The game is set during the 18th Century and will cover historical events such as the growth of the European global empires, the Industrial Revolution and the American War of Independence.  Further information about the game – including screenshots - will be released on the Total War website.

Computer Games:  Carriers at War Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Carriers at War (CAW).  The reviewer (Mike Tomlin) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “Passed Inspection:  Easy to use interface.  Enjoyable quick games.  Challenging to win. Failed Basic:  Battle graphics very basic with no land-based graphics. Replayability could be limited.  Little user control over many aspects.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  Combat Mission: Shock Force Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Battlefront’s Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF). The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection:  Adrenaline pumping depiction of tactical combat using the latest combined arms weapons and tactics. Turn-based or real-time game play. Immersive graphics and sound.  Failed Basic: Occasional bizarre path-finding.  Tactical AI problems. Questionable line of sight through walls.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  First Eagles Additional Aircraft Released

A group of modders (the SFP1 Dev A-Team) have created yet another additional flyable aircraft for my favourite WW1 air combat game: Thirdwire’s First Eagles: The Great War 1918.  It is the late war British Sopwith Snipe. It can be downloaded from the Downloads section of the CombatACE website (it is listed under Thirdwire Series > Add-On Aircraft > WW1 Aircraft).  You will need to be registered with CombatACE to download the files. There are many other additional planes, skins, missions and other mods available on the site.

First Eagles can be purchased from Amazon in the UK.

Computer Games:  Harpoon 3 Review

The Wargamer has published a review of the modern naval warfare simulation Harpoon 3 – Advanced Naval Combat.  The reviewer (Kent Laukhuf) concluded:  “For those of you who would like the down-‘n-dirty, hear it is: Harpoon Advanced Naval Warfare v.3.8 is the most flexible, accurate modern naval simulation available to the commercial market. It boasts decades of commercial and professional input into a tried-and-true model. Beware, it should not be used by the fan of high-tech video games seeking a quick, glitzy gaming experience.”  You can read the review here

Computer Games:  Napoleon’s Campaigns Website

A new website has been launched for the upcoming Napoleonic strategy game Napoleon’s Campaigns.  You can find it here.  There isn’t very much on it yet – but the Overview & Gameplay page provides an introduction to the game. It will feature a variety of campaigns including Austerlitz (1805), Trafalgar (1805), Jena (1806), Friedland (1807), Spain (1808-1814), the Danube (1809), Portugal (1811), Russia (1812), Germany (1813), France (1814), Waterloo (1815) and a hypothetical invasion of England in 1805. Napoleon’s Campaigns is due to be released at the end of the year.

Computer Games:  Combat Mission: Shock Force Updated

Battlefront has released an update (version 1.02) for their release version of the modern tactical combat simulation, Combat Mission: Shock Force.  The update includes performance improvements, changes to the AI, ATGM bug fixes, function key support for Command Groups and other interface changes.  The patch is only for the Battlefront.com release version of the game (v1.01). It can be downloaded from the game’s official webpages at Battlefront.com. For those who have purchased the game from a retail store, Paradox Interactive or Gamersgate.com a separate v1.02 patch will soon be made available by Paradox.

Computer Games:  Commander - Europe at War Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the WW2 grand strategy title Commander – Europe at War.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection:  Fun, fast and addictive gameplay. Computer Games:  Theatre of War Review

The WW2 tactical-level 3D RTS game Theatre of War (ToW) has been reviewed by a member of the Kampfgruppe Independent Wargaming Club.  You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  Campaign Chickamauga Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of the American Civil War game Campaign Chickamauga.  The reviewer (Mike Tomlin) summed up his thoughts as follows:  “Passed Inspection: Excellent gameplay and feel for period warfare: good documentation and research. Miniatures:  Britcon 2007

The British Historical Games Society (BHGS) is hosting their annual convention - Britcon Olympiad - in conjunction with the UK National Wargames Championships at the University of Manchester (Barnes Wallis Building) from Thursday 9th - Sunday 12th August. The event is being supported and attended by many of the prominent computer games companies and suppliers of wargame figures and accessories. Further information is available on the BHGS website.

Computer Games:  Lost Empire Updated

Pollux Gamelabs have released an update for Lost Empire.  Information about the update is available on the game’s official website.

Lost Empire is a turn-based space strategy game set in the 47th century featuring a story line about the struggle for survival of seven galactic civilizations and their battle with a mad goddess. The game features a new approach to storytelling for the 4X genre, different gameplay for each of the seven playable races, real-time 3D rendered battle sequences, a galaxy of up to 5,000 solar systems for players to explore and a huge multi-linear/multilevel tech tree.

HPS Simulations have released updates for two of their Civil War Battles titles: Campaign Gettysburg and Campaign Vicksburg.  They can be downloaded from the American Civil War patches/upgrades webpage at HPS.

 

Friday, 3rd August

Computer Games:  Free Expansion Pack for Punic Wars

HPS Simulations have released an expansion pack for their Ancient Warfare title Punic Wars.  It includes 17 new scenarios and updates for many of the original scenarios.

The game includes a wide range of battles from the early Roman period – and is not restricted to just the Punic Wars against Carthage.  Battles covered by the game include Asculum, Baecula, Bagradas Plains, Beneventum, Cannae, Eryx, Heraclea, Ilipa, Lake Trasimene, Metaurus River, Salaeca, Ticinus, Trebbia and Zama.
