Computer Games:  Conquest of the Aegean Updated

Matrix Games and Panther Games have released their fourth update for Conquest of the Aegean (COTA). It brings their operational-level WW2 title up to version 3.4.151.  Visit the game’s webpages at Matrix to get the update or find out more.

 

Thursday, 24th April

Computer Games:  HPS Games Updated

HPS Simulations have released updates for five of their games: Ancient Warfare: Punic Wars, Ancient Warfare: Gallic Wars, Panzer Campaigns: Moscow ‘41, Panzer Campaigns: Salerno ‘43 and Squad Battles: Soviet-Afghan War. They can be downloaded from the HPS website.

Computer Games:  Panzer Command: Kharkov Review

IGN have published a review of Panzer Command: Kharkov.  The reviewer (Steve Butts) wrote: “The shadow of Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin looms very large over Koios' latest effort ... But based purely on its own merits, Kharkov is actually a very thorough and detailed simulation of Eastern Front warfare. The unit details, the combat modeling, and the missions themselves are more than enough to please more hardcore wargamers.”  Click here to read the review and see 30+ screenshots. Board Games: Field Commander Rommel Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Field Commander - Rommel, which is a solitaire board game that covers Rommel’s campaigns in WW2.  The reviewer (Bill Bodden) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Solid design keeps this game moving. Computer Games:  Europa Universalis: Rome Updated

Paradox Interactive have released an update for their recently released (see below) early Roman period strategy game Europa Universalis: Rome.  The version 1.1 update can be downloaded by using the ‘Check for update’ button on the game launcher.  It adds dozens of game play tweaks to the game and an improved AI.

Board Games: Monmouth Courthouse Released

Clash of Arms have published The Battle of Monmouth - June 28, 1778.  It represents Volume VI in their Battles from the Age of Reason series and is their second game to cover a battle from the American War of Independence. Visit the Clash of Arms website to find out more.

 

Thursday, 17th April

Board Games: Island of Death Released

Avalanche Press have published Island of Death - The Invasion of Malta 1942.  It portrays a hypothetical Axis invasion of Malta during WW2 and uses the same game system as Avalanche’s Alamein.  The game features two scenarios, plus variants which portray various Axis and Allied plans to attack and defend the strategically vital island.  Visit the Avalanche website to find out more.

Computer Games:  Europa Universalis: Rome Review

GameSpy have published a review of Europa Universalis: Rome. The reviewer (Allen ‘Delsyn’ Rausch) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Pros: Sweeping scope; family politics; impressive level of detail.  Cons: Poor user interface; army management and movement problems; missing diplomatic options; awful multiplayer setup.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  Europa Universalis: Rome Released

Paradox Interactive have released the fourth title in their Europa Universalis series: Europa Universalis: Rome.  It is a grand strategy game which covers the rise of Rome from the first Punic War to the start of the true Empire.

Key features of the game:

-  A fully 3D map with integrated graphics

-  Start at any time between 280 B.C. and 27 B.C.

-  Players can choose between 10 different cultures, including the Roman, Celtic, Greek and Egyptian, with more than 53 playable factions on a map with hundreds of provinces

-  Game characters develop new traits through political intrigue and interaction with other characters

-  Players can trade, negotiate or fight to build an empire in the Mediterranean World and beyond

-  Multiplayer for up to 32 players

Computer Games:  Free Game Released

Boku Strategy Games and Matrix Games have released Boku’s The War Engine, a 2D wargame construction kit, as a free download.  All units, weapons and terrain are fully configurable in artwork and stats. The free game includes seven ready-made game systems from fantasy to sci-fi to WW2.  I’ve heard one gamer describe The War Engine as “lego for wargamers.”  Go to the game’s webpages at Matrix for screenshots and more information.

Board Games: Napoleon’s Triumph Review

The Armchair General website has published a review of Napoleon’s Triumph – a board game which covers Napoleon’s victory over the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz in 1805.  The reviewer (Larry Levandowski) summed up his thoughts as follows: “Passed Inspection: Big, bold, but fast playing game. Built the way board games should be. Failed Basic: Solitaire players need not apply.” You can read his review here.

Computer Games:  HPS Early American Games Updated

HPS Simulations have released upgrades for all the titles in their Early American Battles series of games:  French & Indian War, Campaign 1776, War of 1812 and Mexican-American War.  They have also released some optional background sound files - which can be used instead of background music - for French & Indian War, Campaign 1776 and War of 1812.  These updates can be downloaded from the Early American upgrades page at HPS.

Computer Games:  Panzer Command: Kharkov Released

Matrix Games and Koios Works have announced the release of Panzer Command: Kharkov, which is a major new release in the Panzer Command series of 3D tactical level wargames.  In Panzer Command: Kharkov, players step back to the early days of May 1942 as both the German and Soviet armies launched offensives around Kharkov. Panzer Command: Kharkov is a 3D simultaneous turn-based game with numerous historical scenarios and campaigns. It also features a random battle generator and a random campaign generator to create battles and campaigns from the Eastern Front in WW2.  Various new features make it more advanced than the original game in the series - Panzer Command: Operation Winter Storm.  Visit the Panzer Command: Kharkov webpages at Matrix to see some screenshots and find out more.

Computer Games:  Medieval 2: TW Kingdoms Updated

SEGA have released a version 1.05 update for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms.  A list of download sites is available on the TotalWar.com website.

Computer Games:  Advanced Tactics Updated

Matrix Games and VR Designs have released another update for their WW2 turn-based strategy game, Advanced Tactics: World War II (ATWWII). The update is comprehensive and brings the version of the game up to 1.15. Visit the Advanced Tactics webpages at Matrix to get the update or find out more.

Computer Games:  Silent Hunter 4: U-Boat Missions Review

Games32.com has published a review of Silent Hunter 4: Pacific U-Boat Missions – the German sub expansion for Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific.  It includes a range of screenshots.  You can find it here.

Computer Games: Empires in Arms Review

The Out of Eight PC Game Reviews blog has published a review of the Napoleonic grand strategy title Empires in Arms. It gave it five out of eight. You can find the review here (under April 09, 2008).

Computer Games:  Winter War Released

HPS Simulations have released the ninth game in their Squad Battles series: Winter War.  It is a squad level game that covers tactical combat during the Soviet invasion of Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40 and the Continuation War in 1941.  Players have 58 standalone scenarios and three campaigns to choose from.  Find out more about the game on the Squad Battles: Winter War page at HPS. Computer Games:  Combat Mission: Shock Force Patched

Battlefront has announced the release of another patch for Combat Mission: Shock Force (CMSF). The version 1.08 patch is available for owners of any of the three published versions of the game: Battlefront.com, Gamersgate and Paradox Interactive. It includes over 70 different changes, improvements, fixes and new features and affects everything from the game’s graphics to AI behaviour.  The patch can be found on the Downloads page at Battlefront.com.

History Today: Happy Birthday Royal Air Force!

The Royal Air Force was formed when the Royal Flying Corps (Army) and Royal Naval Air Service (Royal Navy) were merged during WW1 on 1st April 1918. To mark the 90th anniversary of the formation of the RAF the Red Arrows and four Typhoons performed a fly past over London.
