The On-Board Motion Sensor (TOMS)
The TOMS unit has been developed by IMAA Ltd, based on the company’s expertise in the design and manufacture of wave buoys (WAVETECTOR) and the On-Board Wave Height Sensor carried by Round-the World yachts.
The unit incorporates an electronic circuit which calculates the RMS acceleration sustained in the vertical plane and compares the result against EC Directive 2002/44/EC recommended values for operations of over-water or over-land craft subjected to turbulent vibration conditions. The sensor displays the RMS output in warning lights on the driver’s control panel, an amber light being displayed when the level exceeds the “Action” value and a red light when the “Limit” value is exceeded. The unit is IP66 rated. The display unit needs to be connected to a dc power supply of between 12 - 30v (max. 20W).
In its Mk.I configuration the TOMS unit is initially set to an assumed operator exposure period of 30mins., where the EC Directive “Action” value is 0.20g and the “Limit” value is 0.47g. Limiting values for other exposure times can be set by IMAA.
The TOMS sensor unit should be positioned at the driver’s position normally under the seat — note the correct orientation marked on the box. It is suggested that it is fixed beneath the seat. The box is IP66 rated with IP68 cable connections.
